Question on tire wearing out very fast - trying to figure out

hey G37 folks, mine 2011 G37 has only 23K miles on it, but dealer just told me the four tires thread is almost 2/36 over and needs replaced,. so i did some research most people getting it replaced at 30K, - but i'm trying to see why this is wearing out so fast.

I live in so-cal, no rains most of the year. and dont use my car a lot because the frequent air travel - so please advise.

It might be wearing out unevenly due to needing alignment.

What tires are you on John? The All Seasons or the Potenzas?

It's the stock Goodyear RSAs -

regarding alignment no i haven't done that since purchased the car. but did tire rotation every 5K - is that the issue?

Could be something as simple as the previous tech used his depth gauge at the center of the tread whereas the latest tech gauged at the outer edge. Second opinion will be way cheaper than new tires.

Tire Wear

You have thin walled high performance tires. They are staggered = no rotation. I just purchased my G with 24000 miles, new tires were included in the deal. Service @ Infiniti Van Nuys sez on Hankook tires, it is what it is. Drive em for a couple of years & carry on.

No, he has the RS-As which are most definitely not a high performance tire. In fact they're one of the worst tires I've ever driven on. I had to get new ones after my first oil change, couldn't take their no-season behavior.

Be glad they're worn out John, just about anything will be an upgrade from those POS treads.

I got 10k out of my stock tires & the staggered arrangement didn't help.

It sounds like you're trying to infer that there is a tread wear problem here because of the incidental notations made on a repair order after an oil change. Is that right? If so, I submit that you are putting entirely too much credibility into the level of effort that was probably employed by the tech that made that notation. That's not to say that it couldn't well be true that you have developed a sudden alignment problem or something, but it bears considering that those notes are often cursory at best.

On another note, WTH are you changing your oil every 3K miles for? (It's 2014 man!!) If this was the same dealer that convinced you to do that, then they could very well have figured you for a mark and are just trying to milk you for some easy business.

Just sayin.

I'll bet your toe-in is excessive. Mine was 10 mm total, and both front and rear Bridgestone RE050A wore on the outside much more than the inside edge. Camber was -1.3°.

I installed SPL front arms and SPC rear arms on my otherwise stock suspension so that I could get -2° camber. I had the toe-in set at 5 mm total. While straight line tracking isn't quite what it used to be, the car sure turns easier. I'll eat my hat if tire wear isn't better.

I do have a question for the OP, though -- why did you post here instead of in the Tire/wheel forum?
