Aftermarket Wheel/Lug Nut Question

I asked this question in the Velgen VMB5 Sedan thread but haven't received a reply there yet so I figured I'd ask it generally and hope for better exposure.

It may seem like a stupid question but Velgen tells me that I will need to use aftermarket lug nuts with their VMB5 wheels. Can anyone direct me to what I need and where to get them? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Any tuner lugs should do because they are skinnier than the fat oem

I just want a normal lug that will fit their wheel. Is the only difference the fact that aftermarket is skinnier? Are there brands that are better than others? Is it really just that simple? If so then I won't ask any more and I'll just find something using that website that lets me search for things on the interwebs.

Your OEM lug nuts use a flat-washer design. There are other names for the design... doesn't matter. The point is, you need a tapered seat lug nut for your aftermarket wheels. I went with McGard, two-piece, spline-drive lug nuts. Very pleased with the choice.

Research lug nuts, and all will become clear. There's a "Doh!" moment in your future, trust me.

Thanks Rochester! I usually research before I ask a question but I've been so busy lately at work I just figured I'd ask first. Thanks for the suggestion. I still would have asked for brand suggestions/experience so much appreciated sir.

More great info. Thanks! The wheels I'm looking at have a +35 offset. When I order the lugs, I'll tell them that to make sure I have the right ones.

FYI , there are lots of options out there and they can get pretty pricey. I just purchased a set and I based my choice on the weight. I saw some that were ashamed to even mention the weights and some that were 1.5 to below 1oz each. I opted for a set that included locks and weighed in at one ounce per ( Kics Leggdura 142 shipped )Good luck with your search.

All of these replies are exactly the kind of information I was looking for. Information based on experience and not based on a page I can read on a website that sells this stuff.

Your info is greatly appreciated!

I did a good bit of research based on the feedback here. In the end, I went with a set of Gorilla lugs. It's basically a full set of wheel locks. I bought them off of Amazon for a great price.
Amazon.com: Gorilla Automotive 21123HT Small Diameter Acorn Chrome 5 Lug Kit (12mm x 1.25 Thread Size) - Pack Of 20: Automotive Amazon.com: Gorilla Automotive 21123HT Small Diameter Acorn Chrome 5 Lug Kit (12mm x 1.25 Thread Size) - Pack Of 20: Automotive

Thanks again to everyone who helped!

Nice choice, but your only problem now is the set you bought does not come with locks. You may want to see if you can cancel the order or just add on the locks. Looks like a set of 4 locks is $15. Def worth the peice of mind for the investment you made in rims

Spline-drive lug nuts are less common than standard hex-nut style, but you're still right. If a wheel thief is serious, they'll have a standard spline-drive socket in their bag.

I thought I read somewhere that these were like having a wheel lock per lug. Oh well. I may have mixed that up with something else. I was given a set of these Gorilla Wheel Locks (
Amazon.com: Gorilla Automotive 71621N Acorn Wheel Locks (12mm x 1.25 Thread Size) - Pack of 4: Automotive Amazon.com: Gorilla Automotive 71621N Acorn Wheel Locks (12mm x 1.25 Thread Size) - Pack of 4: Automotive
) from a local Nissan dealership about a year ago for my wife's Murano. According to Amazon, they'll fit the G. Looks like they are 1.40" long whereas the lugs are 1.35" long. So about a little over half an inch longer. Not sure I want them to stick out like that but I also don't want to make them easier to steal by not having them. I'll have to find out if they make a lock set that matches the length of the lugs I bought.
