I'm thinking about getting some rims that don't have TPMS sensors and I don't want to swap them from my stock rims. Can the TPMS light be reset/turned off without having the sensors on your rims? thx

You cant reset/turn off TPMS light once you remove/replace with a New set of Wheels. By law manufacturers have installed these for your safety. They are not much yet we Sell them for only $180a per (4).

Spend a few $$'s by taking your set out or just buy another set... Some are even selling them in the Classified section...

Running no TPMS is not good nor safe IMO. Its saved my rims a few times in the past... low tires will damage your new investment in the next set of wheels... Ask yourself is it worth it??

Not for me its not. My kids, family that ride with me I decide to keep them safe on that fact... But too Riding Vossens i'll protect my investment...

thanks, but your suggestion doesn't sense. the canister requires a set of TPMS to work, so if i'm buying a 2nd set why wouldn't i just put them on the 2nd set of rims.

swapping TPMS between rims is a huge pain the ****. to each is own, i guess.

I was told by a Z owner that i could reset or turn off the light if i wasn't running TPMS.

 

You take the tpms out and put them in the canister. Then, you air it up and toss the canister in your trunk. The car can read the tpms without them being in the wheels. No light and you can swap wheels as often as you want.

 

First time I've read about this..learn something new everyday. Great idea for those who swap wheels all the time but it pretty much makes tpms useless.

You're going to have two sets of wheels I'm assuming (aftermarket and stocks for winter?). Why not just spend the money and pick up a second hand set in the classified for pretty cheap.

 

Bypassing safety devices like TPMS is short sighted, usually illegal, potentially dangerous, and frankly, a bit stupid. The light, quite difficult to extinguish, is there to remind you of all that.

 

I don't need opinion, thanks, just facts. We got along without TPMS for decades without too many problems, and frankly, I've never had a tire blow out or leave me stranded. But, now that I have TPMS my reward has been a dash light the intermittently flashes for no reason.

I may very well buy a second set and slap them on the new rims. But, until that point, my original question still stands.

 

Please understand that I learned to drive in the fifties when we had no safety devices, no seat belts, air bags, padded dashes, collapsible steering columns, dual brake lines, third brake lights, and of course, no TPMS. Even turn signals were a dealer installed option. Highway deaths were much higher than they are today certainly in the absence of these devices.

On a personal note in terms of facts, I was driving along at freeway speeds on a hot California day when the TPMS light went on in my ’04 G35 coupe. I pulled over to check the tires but saw nothing, no noticeable deflation. I then went home at a much slower speed and checked my tires with a gauge. Sure enough, the left rear was down to 22 pounds. I had the leak fixed the next day. IMO without that light I may have had a blowout at 70mph that could have ended my life.

Sure I did without TPMS for 58 years, but that only means I was lucky. You too may go the rest of your life without it, and be just as lucky. But good driving doesn’t depend on luck, and that's a fact.

 

There are a lot of shops today that will not work on the cars (tire rotations, rebalancing, etc) if a car comes in w/out the sensors working or with the light on. I hear more and more cases of this via phone every day.

 

I agree with Neal @Tirerack.

Though to the Op... the question that Stands would be "No" a shop nor you can disable that function in your G. By Law its there for your safety, passengers etc... Think of the liability a shop or you would cause if a issue was to arise?

Now what you do is your own business, but too keeping a Pressurized container regardless of just Air.. is not safe!

Thank you for answering the question. I realize that a shop would never do it nor would I ask a shop to disable the light.

I won't be keeping a pressurized can in my trunk with TPMS rolling around inside.

I'll just deal with the light on until I get second set. My light comes on intermittently anyway, so I'm getting used to it.
