Am I right in understanding I've got a 17" tire on an 18" wheel?

How is that even possible?

 

Those are the factory 17 inchers, the actual rim edge to edge will be more, it's where the tire sets inside the rim that's 17". Hope that makes sense. Also your rim width is where the inside bead of the tire rests, so an 8" rim might actually be 10" wide from outside edge to outside edge

Wow, by that much, they're alsmost measureing 18 1/2 inches.
