Not happy with the ride on my WORK wheels

So I ordered my WORK GS-5's back in February. Waited 8-9 weeks for them to come in. When they came in I was amazed at the quality and the finish of the wheels. I mounted them on Hankook V12's and I have been riding on them ever since late April or so. I just recently put on my factory wheels on tires for the winter and MAN what a difference in the ride! I never noticed how harsh my WORK setup is compared to the factory setup. I know that my WORKs are lightweight, with a thinner tire so I'm going to feel every bump in the road. Especially since I'm on springs too. But I never knew it made that much difference! My G just floats so smoothly now with the stock setup. Anyone else notice this with their higher end wheels?? I also noticed some vibration in my WORKs compared to nothing in the stockies. Are WORKS, VOLKS, SSR etc. etc. too light of a wheel for the heavy G?

A "harsh" ride is hard to say since it's mostly subjective. However, with lowering springs and smaller sidewall tires, the ride will for sure get harsher. It has more to do with the suspension and tires rather than the wheels. I bet if you put on your stock springs, it'll get even smoother

With those high end wheels I'd invest in coilovers, should be happier w/ the ride

Yea, coilovers will make a difference. It'll get rid of some of the harshness while maintaining a better/stiffer ride.

Me personally didn't like the hankook v12s. They sacrifice ride for handling IMO.
Not the best tires for the g's.

OP, your wheels are a solid rigid object. The harshness of your ride is due to your tires/suspension, not wheels. The weight of the wheels might affect the perceived power as lighter wheels will spin up faster.

This thread would be more meaningful if you specified exactly what tire sizes you're comparing. Saying stock isn't saying much. Stock wheels vary from 17" to 19" depending on model of car. Be sure to specify entire tire size too.

Yea i agree with all of the above posts. Might be time to invest in some coilovers. Im on H&R's now and definitely going to upgrade to coils some time soon as the ride is pretty harsh being that its my dd. Hopefully some coils w/ dampening adjustment I can get my ride dead on to how I want it.

I went from eibachs to stance true coilovers, and man, what a difference. Rides super smooth, and handles like its on rails. Good luck!

Thanks everyone for all the replies. Your comments are exactly what I was thinking. I'm not 100% satisfied with my tires and coilovers would make a big difference in the ride. My WORK specs are:
20 X 9.5 +20
20 X 10.5 +30

245/30/20
275/30/20

And my stocks are the 08 19" sport wheels with the factory tire sizes, whatever they are. I'm thinking about picking up a set of Megan coils or BC.

I have no issues with my SSR on Tein SSP suspension. I played around with the EDFC and even on the stiffer settings the ride is still nice.Might be the springs making the ride feel funny. Also did you get a new alignment after lowering? Wheels balancing could be part of the "problem" as well.

I was told by some vendors that SSR are racing wheels and they are to light for Our Cars.

Which tires? Some are several pounds heavier than others.

Also, the GS5 aren't what i'd consider lightweight. They're light for 20s, but not by much.

get coilovers or koni yellow dampers paired with springs and just get rid of the v12s asap. they're harsh and honestly don't make up for it with handling. the treadware is decent but honestly not worth the sacrifices.

If your works are vibrating you probably need hubrings for them. Thicker sidewall profile tires tend to absorb bumps and roads better than low profile thin sidewalls as well..it's just how it is.
