TPMS was phased in on some cars around in 2004 (my ‘04 G35 coupe had them), but as of 2008 it is mandatory on all new cars sold in the U.S. Look it up if you want.

As a side note, it may not unlawful to disconnect the system, but it IS illegal to extinguish or bypass the warning light on the dash in any way. In other words, if you have aftermarket rims without TPMS your punishment is to have that light nag you every time you drive.

Frankly, with the vast majority of available rims today being completely compatible with TPMS, I don’t understand why anyone would select a non-compatible set.
