Hello all,
A few months ago I went from my stock tires of 225/45 in the front and 245/40 rear to 245/40 front and 275/35 rear.
My mileage seems to have decreased from around 19mpg to 16-17. At first I thought I was just driving more aggressively to test my new tires, but after a few months and several tanks of gas I think the decrease is real. I did not think going a little wider would have that much of an effect on my mileage, did anyone else notice this when going wider? The diameter is exactly the same. Nothing else changed except the tire width.
I want to make sure this can be attributed to the tire width rather than some other issue.

Quite often, if changing tires affects diameter, rolling resistance and/or weight, you can see drastic fuel economy differences.
A wider tire, deeper tread and/or stickier compound will absolutely affect mpgs because rolling resistance was increased. On some hybrids, they lose up to 7 mpg depending on which tire a certain trim level is delivered with.
I lost 4 mpg on my truck when I bought new tires for it. They are the same size as previous tires, but a different manufacturer and they have the winter logo on them, they are much stickier than the previous tires, so they are great in the winter, but damn, I immediately dropped to 12 mpg after putting them on. I'll probably go back to the previous tires some day.

2014 q60s 15 spoke Sport package wheels
front 19x8.5 +43 weigh approx 25.5lbs
Rear 19x9 +45 weigh approx 29lbs
weights were via bathroom scale minus weight of tires based off tirerack specs. Tpms and wheel weights still attached although the wheels seemed fairly true as minimal weights were on them.
