225/50/18 Winters. Traction Control Question???

Hey Guys,

I put a set of Toyo winters (225/50/18 recomemded by Tire Rack) on my S but now when I accelerate at average speeds my Slip light comes on alot. This is happening on dry pavement with full traction from what I can feel.

Is this happening to anybody else with this tire size? Can this damage my traction control?

Sorry if this question has been asked before...

Interesting ... seems as if the tires can't grip the road you're driving on properly, causing the traction control to kick in.

Probably due to you being a little 'heavy footed' on launches ('average' to you ... might be different to others). I have Nokian WR G2 tires (235/50/18) and never experienced the traction control to go off.

It won't damage the traction control -- that's what it's supposed to do -- detect tire spin and retard the throttle until the tire can grip the road.

PS You bought the new Toyo Garit? Guess you aren't very pleased with its dry pavement performance, huh? Wait until the temps drop -- I'm sure they will handle much better. And remember -- tires in general improve after about 500 miles of driving ... the oils from the rubber are on the surface and need to be burned off before you start getting max grip ...

I was actually coming on here to post this exact same thing. I recently had Toyo Garrit's installed on my G37S and have the same problem. The traction control will even kick-in during moderate acceleration in 4th gear when it seems that no slippage whatsoever is occurring. I have resorted to turning my traction control off for any remotely "spirited" driving.

Does anyone have this problem with the Blizzaks?

None with my Blizzaks (from what I can remember).

Maybe the Toyos are too soft and they're just getting ripped apart by the pavement, hence the traction control detecting that as slip?

Brand new tires still have some silicon coating on them that needs about 500 miles to wear off.

I'll wait a few weeks and see how they perform once it gets a bit colder out.

Are you feeling the ABS coming on prematurely under braking? That would be a good test of these tires being very low on grip.

I'm not having any issues with the ABS but I haven't had to slam on the brakes yet..

You're right, i'm not extremely pleased with their dry pavement performance so hopefully the issue is as simple as them being new like you said.

Thanks for your help

225/50/18 is very close to oem specs so i do not see the problem. the tires probably meant to be driven in the snow and not in dry conditions?

Remember, the winter tires have a lot of slits on the tires. They don't perform (aka grab the road) as well as a performance summer tire. I have the same problem with my Blizzaks. Just don't over power the tires and brake easy.

I have had some hard braking with no issue with the ABS coming on. They seem to have plenty of grip, that's why it is weird that the traction control keeps coming on when there is no way they are actually slipping (moderate acceleration in 4th and 5th gear for example).
