Question Shops That Have Completed Multiple 4.08 Final Drive Gear Installs?

Well, I am definitely going to do this for the G. The only complaint I have about this car is the lack of low-end and mid-range torque. The 4.08, from what I've read, will greatly help this.

I'm in Las Vegas and I'm looking for a reputable shop who has completed this install more than a few times. I don't want to run into problems such as whine due to incorrect shim sizes etc.

I am willing to drive a few hours, so So-Cal, maybe Arizona is fine.

I figure So Cal probably will be where the most installs have occurred.

Let me know. Thanks.

Also @ 33k miles is the install kit #2 necessary? ( * 2 X Nissan OEM Differential Side Carrier Bearings * 2 X Nissan OEM Differential Side Oil Seals * 1 X Nissan OEM Inner "Back" Pinion Gear Bearing * 1 X Nissan OEM Outer "Front" Pinion Gear Bearing * 1 X Nissan OEM Pinion Oil Seal * 1 X Permatex Ultra Gray Gasket Maker)

And is this the best price? NISSAN 4.08 FINAL DRIVE GEARS (370Z / G37) - Transmission / Drivetrain - 370Z / G37

This seems to be a better deal.

ZSpeed Performance Nissan Infinti OEM & Performance Parts

Wonder if I can buy all these parts cheaper from Nissan directly.

Also wonder if I should buy a bunch of different sized shims, or maybe the shop will have them?

shop will not have the shims on hand, they can measure and tell you what size is required and you can purchase from nissan. There was a thread where someone had posted various shims part numbers.

Ah, thought so. I know they won't know what size shim until they are actually doing the install.

Any idea of the thread name? Is it on myg37.com or one of the Z forums?

Thanks. I've read several threads over the last couple days and don't recall reading one with multiple shim part #s.

Sebastian at specialty z in Simi Valley, CA. About an hour and a half away from Orange county, Ca. They have actually performed this and I have talked to them in depth on this subject via email. I'll include some of the emails back and forth, original emails start at bottom and go to the top. Also my configuration may obviously be different than yours. They have been around for years, started with earlier nissans (240's and 300's).

$350

Ok, that all sounds reasonable. I already have the whiteline bushings as I intended to do those because my rear mount bushing has leaked. One question I have though, if I were to bring you the MT diff assembly, the ring and pinion gears, and the installation kit and have you do all of that what would that cost be? Basically what would the cost for the whole repair be minus the whiteline bushings and minus the r&r of the diff assembly itself.

Hi Jason

Not sure about the the driveshaft. I am not sure what the length differences are if any.

Associated costs:

$265 for the rebuild kit (not including the gears).

Labor for R&Ring the diff, installing ring and pinion, rebuild kit would be $500.

I also recommend doing the Whiteline diff bushings which adds an additional $270 for parts and labor.

So if I purchase the MT pumpkin and supply the 4.08 gears and install kit what would be the cost for you to put it together? Also I get the MT has a 4-bolt flange, so if I got the CF one piece ordered for the 6MT version that would fit on my 5AT with the MT pumpkin? And what would you charge to install that as well?

Yes, it will depend on how the driveshaft is configured. The MT uses a 4-bolt flange configuration.

Will not affect the tune. I looked into the launch control and it will NOT work with the auto.

Ok, that’s good to hear. A couple questions on that, I was planning on running a one piece carbon fiber drive shaft eventually. Will that work the the MT differential? Also, should I wait for the tune until after this or will this not effect the tune at all?

Yes. We have done many gear swaps. Yours will require finding a MT differential (lsd) to install the gears in. The AT housing is too small.

One last thing about a different subject. I have heard a few people suggesting swapping to the 4.08 gears is a very noticeable and nice mod. Are you guys familiar with this or have you done this? Again, I have an 08 g37s 5AT.

Maybe check out West Covina Nissan? Thenismoshop.com has the 4.08 ring kit too.
They seem to provide many aftermarket parts but not sure about installation though. They have all factory spec, know how, and parts if they can do the installation.

Appreciate the help!

No problem man, let us know how it all turns out. I've heard nothing but good things about this swap.

Been in contact with Sebastian. He is saying I will lose function of my cruise control.

From everything I have read online, everyone who has a 6MT still has functioning cruise control.

I am not sure if he has just done so many Auto gear swaps that he is remembering incorrectly?

It's possible that's the case or it's possible the few he has done have lost cruise control. I have read into this thoroughly and it does seem like most people still have it but i have seen plenty of people saying they lost it.

I'm not worried about it either way. I don't take that many road trips that I will be bothered by not having cruise control. I personally think I will still have cruise....but you never know.

Anyway, I have an appointment scheduled for the 18th-20th to get this done.

Looking forward to it.

Just hope the install is perfect.

Never fun "ruining" a perfect vehicle in an attempt to mod it.

In Arkansas? Not really sure if they would be able to help on that. But you never know.

They are a great shop and very knowledgable.

A bit busy, so be patient with the e-mail replies.
