Race the Runway
This is the long version of a short story...lol
Back in 1959 my Dad was the manager of a parashoot factory. He was a war vet, and a trained Para Trooper by the P.P.C.L.I. That was how and where he met my mom(the fatory not the war..lol)and my grampa. Grampa had an airplane and was a pilot, dad had a parashoot and needed a plane and a place to jump. Hence the Smiths Falls airport was born. A family friend Russ Beach (you probably have had one of his tool boxes in your shop) had a twin engine he flew out of Ottawa. Bingo...the money man...lol I don't know much more than that story about the airport aside from when Grampa was the Pres out there when I was a terrible teen. God bless him and his early bedtimes and not to mention his fuel pump key.....heh heh heh Gas was pretty cheap back then (78) but 110 octain was only for the flyers back then. OK so much for mammory lane, I went out to the ol airport in Smiths Falls after almost 30 years, Grampa and Dad both passed on, I was just wondering what ever happened to the ol place.
Wow! 82 hangars full time flight school and a 4000 foot paved runway.(important to the story)
The current Pres gave me the nickel tour and told me about the event Race the Runway. It's in the second or third year now and has been booked solid for a bit but even as a spectator it'll be worth the admission price. I think he said 60 exotics will go flat out to win the fastest time. Just seeing a Bugotti or Lambo really go flat out would be killer. There is even one car being built JUST for this event, 1.4 MILLION just to run this runway!
I hope to get back home for this thing on August 24th. It's just neat to know that in a WAAAAY round about way my family has something to do with it.
So if there are any forum peeps in the Ottawa area keep it in mind.
