Yes, the clear on the black cars really sucks

We recently had some snow and ice here in GA and the gravel mixture they put on the road has destroyed my paint job as it chipped through the clear, through the basecoat down to the grey epoxy in countless spots. While a rock chip is acceptable from time to time in any paint job, this is just ridiculous as the car even has some chips on the doors and the roof. The clear is not only thin (as little as 3.4 total mills including primer, basecoat and clear), but obviously brittle. I just looked at the other 7 vehicles in my parking lot and not one had a rock chip on the hood.

The good news is State Farm said its a comp claim and once my favorite body shop gets freed up from the snow cars, I'll have them do an allover paint job on this with a black black base vs the Infiniti black brown cast base they use. I'll have them detrim the whole thing including pulling quarter glass and bumpers so there's no tape lines. I'll post before and after pics as well so you guys see what black should look like.

Atleast you can blame the gravel for damaging your paint.
Mine just wore off on the roof and fender, crazy for a car parked indoors always. The paint is very very thin.

Is there anyway to protect the paint on a G?
(Clear bra, vinyl?)

I had a clear bra installed on my Malbec Black when it was new (3rd party) and it helps a lot. I didn't go up the hood though, just the bumper and grill area.

Someone just sent me a link to a web site advertising a product that actually bonds to the paint as thin plastic protective coating. I'll post the link. This winter has taken it's toll on my Black beauty too.....a few chips down to the grey base coat in the hood. ****........We'll see how the Entire Care Protection package that the dealer sold me works for fixing chips in the paint. Yes, My other 2 Infinitis (2007 & 2010 Gs) were black. The paint is very thin on these cars...

How come you didn't do the whole hood?

I didn't want the hood done. Based on the wife's 2008 G in Blue Slate the hood is fine. The bumper is a mess so I based it on that and the M is higher than the G.

I stopped by my favorite body shop last week and the good news is I could get in as quick as a few weeks and this is going to be a full two week job.

I had clear bra installed on my Malbec Black, before it left the dealer when I picked it up.

I went halfway up the fenders and hood. My only regret is not going over the whole fenders and hood.

I didnt realize that the G has an aluminum hood, so at least chips wont turn into rust. It would still bother me if it was all chipped up though, I think the clear bra was worth it (even for only going up half the hood)

It swirls easier than regular paint, but Im guessing it would clean up easier too (I havent detailed it just yet). Funny thing is my brother in law went to get the same done to his new car and the price is now just about double what I paid 3 years ago.

I never had any issues with my M37 clear coat. I installed a full clear bra on the front end of the car and my side skirts a year after I owned it and till this day 3 years later the paint itself is still clean.

My installer 631coatings does a full custom kit, no precut so it is not overstretched

and daily driven

I would want an AWD one for the wife but the damn thing looks like a crossover with the stock wheel gap.

Agree ... that's the ONLY thing I don't like about my M. I really don't want to alter the suspension nor spend big bucks on new larger rims / tires. I live with it. But I do love the silver rims in the snow picture above.

I would too! But the M would be for my wife, who I dont think has ever driven a RWD car in her life. Not sure an M is the place to start learning
