Has the idea of having instant messaging ever been thought? I think it would be perfect for the firum.

This may be hard to implement because it will use up a lot of the forums resources. There already is a useless thread where members chat and post useless pics all day in the off topic section

a good light weight option is a shoutbox. theres plenty of them for VB. it would be a good way for people to talk without having to keep goin back and refreshing the post, it would also allow people to ask simple questions without creating new threads or resurrecting LONG dead ones. and if someone wants to im someone specific they can just ask for their AIM or MSN or w/e

It's been suggested before, I'll take this opportunity to link both of these threads together for future reference.

I think that's another thing IB wants to avoid. People would stop creating threads because chat would be an easier communication method, and some valuable info could get flushed down the chatroom. That beats the whole purpose of having a forum. The endless threads on this forum are the reason why myG37 threads show up on google as soon as you search for anything G37 related.

that does make sense. archives are a good reference, and when someone does post duplicate threads someone usually points out that it could be found in old posts lol.

Instant messaging could only be moderated if/when a moderator was participating. Many people (including some members of this forum) are idiots and need to be told what to say or not say to offend others or infringe upon their rights. It would just go very badly. That's pretty easy to see from my perspective. The abuse and BS level would be astronomical. Just more PMs for staff to go through becasue of one member complaining about another. To say nothing of the nonstop spammers that would make it their playground.

In short it simply would not work as well as many people think. There's always AIM or MSN Messager if you want that functionality.

why not set up an irc channel or something for public g37 use and not have it forum specific? if IB doesnt want to get involved, as a g37 community we could always set something up that doesnt have to go through this site. I do understand BB and Sam's points, and while they are good I have been in situations where I'm looking for an answer to a question and have to read through pages and pages of useless comments. its worth at least trying out if enough people think it would be beneficial rather than a medium for more offense and infringement upon others rights.

Thats a good idea, but i doubt most people even know what IRC even is let alone how to use it...

The idea, along with a chat box has been brought up many times. The reason why we haven't ever implemented anything is because of the added security vulnerability with those additional codes. I've seen other forums with them and IB, who owns MyG37 also owns vBulletin. We can mention it to them once more and see if any things changed.

All some one has to do is either setup a group msn, aim, yahoo, facebook chat. Problem solved. I think the messenger thing was done before. For a few months people would create group chats on aim and people would join here and there throughout the day.
