Too many sub-forums

Just a thought, as I frequent a lot of forums out there.

I feel like there are too many sub-forums here, and it pretty much makes each forum look a bit more inactive than they would otherwise look. The lounge for instance simply has too many off-topic sub-forums, when the lounge itself could house the whole thing and look a bit more active. There are a lot of sections I just don't get around to clicking because there are just too many sub-forums to click. It would also bring interest to new topics/posts that people otherwise wouldn't have found.

Maybe this was done to be forward-looking, but we just don't have the numbers to necessitate that kind of organization.

I'm coming from Bimmerforums, and I loved being able to hang out in the E36 section and read all about the vert/sedans/coupes in one forum since they were all mechanically the same.

I just think bringing some things together might work out better. My 2c.

Thanks.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Do you click the "New Posts" button each time you log in? It will only show threads that have new posts since your last forum visit, regardless of which forum or subforum they are in. You'll only see the stuff that you haven't seen before that has something new.

I can't say for sure because this forum format was designed long before I was around here, but looking active was likely less of a concern when designing the format than actually putting information in a place where it could easily be found rather than throwing lots of everything into one "basket" and letting the members sort it out. It facilitates finding information rather than posting the same question a gazillion times, which still happens. But if it's well organized, then there's no excuse for it besides being lazy and refusing to browse or search.

it seems to work IMO. Except when people just post whatever they want wherever they choose like your preference, then things are hard to find.

Anyway, thanks for your input.

You're right about making information easy to find. It definitely does that. However, I think it might prevent people from participating in discussions that they may otherwise participate in. Having a lot of lounge topics in the same basket, for instance, may cause threads to have more page views and more discussion.

Maybe I'm in a minority Thanks for the new posts tip.

I srtrongly agree.

We can have all the subject on the same page and have it moved by the moderator to the appropriate folder. But leave the title/link so viewers can see it all on one page.

Thanks for the input cruzmisl.

The format of the forum goes way back to G35Driver. When MyG37 was first created, we imported the entire layout of Driver to over here. Like Black Betty already mentioned, the various sections you see here are for organizational purposes. Rather than have a few large sections where various threads are posted, we've always felt that having a more structured and organized forum layout would be more beneficial to the members. It certainly makes it easier when searching for specific topics. Perhaps we can look at some of less visited subsections and collapse them into their main section. Thanks again for the input.

sedan and coupe forum need there own sub forum for pics. keeping the media pic forum open for all types of pics.

Scanning through pics locating sedans is really hard.

I agree, i don't have a sedan but i hear what lightsout is saying. So basically....why be on the forum if all we are going to do is use google anyways? A sub forum couldn't be too difficult to make, but i don't run any site so i don't know for sure.

Separate picture share sections for the Coupe and Sedan have been created.

The OP was already complaining that there's too many forums, now you've created another one to satisfy someone else? Oh my God, somebody is going to be unhappy with a decision you've made about administrating the forum!!! What are you going to do now???

Maybe other areas could be streamlined but I think it's a good idea to have separate coupe and sedan forums with separate picture areas. Coupes are great and all, but I don't think sedan people want to sift through a thousand coupe pics looking for sedan pictures.

LightsOut, perhaps you can post some pics of your sedan. I saw in another thread that you mentioned adding the lip spoiler to your 2010 and thought it looked even better than the 2010 sport. However, I couldn't find any pics of your car so maybe you can post some when you get a chance.

Good point Jeremy. Wait till I create picture share subsections for every color!
