Hey, do you know if this dongle is required for a dyno tune?

I'm not sure, but I'm guessing no, since I would expect your tuner to have a license for the software and not require you to supply it. I was going to self-tune through a remote tuner like SpecialtyZ or Visconti, which requires the cable kit, the dongle, and a flash license for the tune itself. I think for an in-person dyno tune, you would just pay them and not have to supply anything but the car.

I think the license is per car so you would need to pay $225-300 I think

That's the dongle that allows you to run the software. It's a security feature to prevent piracy. (probably so you can't make a bootleg cable work) In order to tune your car you need this cable with usb dongle, and a license for the actual car. The license will cost an additional fee from somebody like Visconti or SpecialtyZ. The cable and dongle can be resold after using it, (or when you're sure you'll never need it again because your car is totaled) but the license is per car and doesn't transfer.

For context, the EcuTek ProECU Programming Kit (cable, connector, usb key) typically goes for around $350. So $250 shipped is entirely fair, IMO.

The only reason I'm bumping this is because it gave me pause to stagger the overall cost of next year's tune by purchasing the ProECU kit now. Sadly, I literally told the wife yesterday there would be zero car purchases between now and next Spring. So that didn't happen, LOL.

Never tell the wife a specific timeframe on mods because you're shooting yourself in the foot by doing so! Free bump for your Ecutek kit woof. I'm in the later stages of my tune and not sure if I'll be selling mine or not. I don't think I'll be changing anything else in the next 2-3 years that would require a retune so it's kinda hard to just sit on a $250 kit without selling it.

Sadly I never got to use this cable or tune my car at all. I kept holding out a little longer because of the cost, and then BOOM - totaled by a deer. I don't necessarily regret doing the other mods first as I enjoyed the car WAY more after all the suspension mods, brakes, hfc's, and exhaust, but it was a serious bummer. I wasn't ready to move on.

Ironically enough, I tuned my Golf R the moment the CPO warranty expired. (like, 24001 miles) Half a dozen clicks of the mouse and I'm up 80hp/68tq. Crazy.

I think it varies depending on who is doing the actual tuning work. I never actually purchased a license and got my car tuned. It looks like Visconti charges $350. SpecialtyZ (people rave about their work, fwiw) seems like they're asking $400, plus $50 if you want a custom tune, but in the extras section it lists "Include License +$315." That total seems awfully high but I'm not completely sure. You might want to shoot them an email before you buy from me if you want to be sure.

Hi Jimmyg37. Sorry, but it's pending sale with somebody already. I'll update the thread when it's final or if anything changes.
