I have done a good bit of research on this forum about oil. I read the whole oil sticky. I know that it can be more of a matter of opinion but I am leaning towards going with royal purple for my first oil change coming up. I drive the car fairly conservative and I think I read that redline was better for very aggressive drivers. Plus I haven't really anything bad about RP.

Information in my car: 2012 auto with 62.5k on it. I bought it over 4 months ago when it had 60k. So that is why I'm coming up on my first oil change. I have no idea what they previous owner used.

Here is my issue... I put very few miles on my car. As you can tell from my information above. It is my daily driver but I work 3.5 miles from home. Also when we go on trips we always take my wife's FX35. I do plan on doing some day mountain runs but its always going to be about 5 months before I hit 3K on my oil.

Is that an issue? I know it should be change every 3 months but I will be at around 1.5K on the oil. If I use RP do you think that will let me get away with changing it every 4-5 months at 2-3K on it?

Here is what each day looks for me.

Leave for work at 8:50am. Get to work at 9. Leave for home at 11:50 arrive home at noon. Leave back for work at 12:50 pm get back at work at 1. Most of the time Ill take another break at 4:30 get home at 4:40 go back to work at 5:15ish and get to work 5:25pm. Ill work until 7:30 or 8 and stop by a store or whatever. Im home by 8pm. Do it over again lol.

I know that sounds like a crazy schedule but I work at a college and teach there as well. So its long days but also flexible. I also know that looks like a good bit of driving but im literally in my car for for just over an hour and only less than 25 miles a day. Prob only 10 miles on a weekend because we take my wifes car most of the time.

 

I do 5k mile changes on 5w-30 mobile1 full synthetic, current my car is at 96k.

Thank you for the reply. My concern is not the miles but the time. I would be going 5 months apart for oil changes just to hit 3k.

 

Infiniti recommends every 3750 miles/3 months for more severe operating conditions or 7500 miles/6 months for less severe (whichever interval comes first). You'll want to do your own math and determine your own suitable interval depending on your driving conditions based on the listed parameters.

 

Stay away from purple. Its a gimmick. Burns and runs thin. Go mobil1 0w40

 

Man you guys are killing me. I thought I had it figured out on the type of oil. I am now thinking about just taking it to the dealership and have them change it. I know they are going to rape me on the price but at least I will have the service records.

I know its easy to change myself but I work a lot and I don't have the time and more importantly the tools.

 

I use Mobil 1 5W-30 every 3,500 miles. My car is a daily driver, no need for super special oils. It's good enough and doesn't give me any reason to switch. The fact that you barely drive your car means you probably shouldn't worry about it either.

 

I just called the dealership and they charge $50 for an oil change which isn't bad imo. He said they use Mobil 5w-30 but when I asked if it was synthetic he said no and that the manufacture does not recommend synthetic.

Yea they use semi blend.
If your under warranty do a factory fill.
If not bring your own oil and have infiniti or nissan do it.

 

I have 62K on the car so I am just out of the bumper to bumper warranty.

Factory fill is just whatever the book calls for and infiniti uses.

What they use wont hurt its just not the best imo.
Synthetic has cleaning agents to prevent long-term sludge build up.

 

You won't find your answer on the forums. What I suggest is run X oil for X months and then send an oil sample out to blackstone labs for an oil analysis. They'll be able to tell you exactly what's going on and suggest a routine for you.

I personally use Motul 8100 every ~4k miles.
