To the OP, you will be fine with the Tanabe's. At every police station there seems to be a few Infiniti owners there, so cops are familiar with the cars. If you ever do get pulled over for noise, you can always tell them: "you know the car is naturally loud (arent all Infiniti's known for the sporty SOUND, power, look, etc?)". Plus the Tanabe tips are not super sized as to give the impression of being noisy just by their appearance.

I guess what I'm concerned about are the huge tips that come on the Tanabe's. Is there a way to make them a bit smaller so they won't be as noticeable?

I'm probably going to paint them black to look OEM.

I think that's a little extreme and unnecessary...LOL. What may draw a cop's attention to your car is the loudness of your exhaust, not how big the tips look. They don't go looking for cars with huge tips, you know. Your car may have a melon shooter and you can cruise right next to a cop and he still won't pull you over if it doesn't make any sound.

I have the tanabe exhaust with test pipes and computer tune on my Z in Ma. been running it for the past three years never been ticketed for the exhaust just speeding... lol.

Will almost all inspection stations pass you with an aftermarket exhaust? Are there any to actually avoid?

wow if they are ticketing people for this then I have yet to hear anyone get sucks tickets. I would figure half of the modded Subi's would be on the top of that list with their outrageous exhausts...

The exhaust is not the problem, and will pass. It is when you add cats or test pipes. Depending on if you have a defouler(sp) plug to avoid an o2 sensor if untuned. I have been flagged at an inspection station, but it was due to my tune vs. the exhaust set up.

Basically, you can't have more than three monitors showing n/a or unsupported in terms of inspection.

Police aren't to strict in my area at all (Northshore) I've seen plenty cars modded from head to toe all left alone.

As far as inspections, just gotta talk to others in the area and see where they go because some places don't care and will pass you.

If you do get pulled over, possible to play dumb and say that's how the car was when you bought it? Just saying. No sense in arguing with the cop if you've already been pulled over.

The exhaust laws in MA prevent me from installing and aftermarket exhaust and I can get ticketed for it with an insurance rate increase.

Here is the law:
No person shall operate a motor vehicle on any way which motor vehicle is equipped (1) with a muffler from which the baffle plates, screens or other original internal parts have been removed and not replaced; or (2) with an exhaust system which has been modified in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted by the exhaust.

Can someone with some experience comment on this? I've read online stories of people getting ticketed for this. If it ends up being a problem, I'm thinking of selling mine. I haven't opened the box yet.
I own a 2015 F150 with the coyote 5.0. I installed a cat-back system in my truck with all legal parts still there ie: 4 cats and resonator and could not pass an inspection. As soon as they would hear my truck start they shook their heads and told me to try elsewhere. Stock on my truck is 85db, modified was 100db. I had cops following me constantly.
