Wink newby on the site

Hey - new to the site. Have been on other similar sites for my ford f150 and Acura RSX that had lots of great info and is very helpful.
Been a part owner of a 2013 g37X for a little over a year now.
Super nice car with a respectable gettup n go. We had bought a Nissan Maxima SE brand new in 1999 and had it until a few years ago. Put 220k miles on it and handed it down to relatives.
Bought the g37X used from a local dealer with low miles ~40k. It now has about 52k. Started having minor problems after about 6 mo. Been a good runner until recently. Local Infiniti dealer taking a look at it now.
Figure Id get familiar with the myG37.com site because I have a feeling I'm not going to like what the dealer service guy tells me. Not afraid to get in there and work on my cars but a bit shy when its a daily driver and not paid off yet. -pete

Thanks for the welcome. Looking forward to search through the site.
Probably need to find out how to replace a vq37vhr engine in a recent model infiniti.
I'm sure I'll be asking a few questions in the next few weeks. Mostly probably need some advice..
Thanks.

Unhappy

So the dealer needs $5000 to replace the engine. The motor is a type vq37vhr. It has serious sludge buildup. We've had the car for a little over a year (2013 g37X) and has about 52K on it. They say they wont honor the warranty (6mo/70kmiles?) because there is no record of previous oil changes or maintenance besides the work we have records for over the past 12 mo. Does that make sense ? I thought the warranty followed the car not the owner ? Maybe someone else here can help me understand or has had similar experiences. Going down there this morning to talk about our options - they didn't seem to have any to offer on the phone.

I'd get Infiniti corporate involved and see what they say, sometimes they are willing to step in when the dealer won't work with you. If you are in an area w/ another Infiniti dealer I'd give them a shot too.

Sorry to hear of this

Welcome to the site and sorry to hear about your G. Like blnewt said, try calling corporate or at least a different dealer. The warranty does follow the car not the owner assuming it's a factory warranty and not aftermarket but they can claim negligence caused the problem and they won't cover it. Did they say how long it would have been like that to cause the issue? Was this a certified pre-owned? If so, you should have received some paperwork from their "167 point inspection" and if you didn't then go back to them and say wtf or call corporate. Is this the same dealer that sold you the car? If so, and you've only had the car for a year and they claimed an inspection was done on the car then they f'd up and you shouldn't have to pay for it. What did you have done in the past 12 months? I assume oil change? Go back to whoever did the oil change and ask them if they noticed any issues. Unlikely but worth a shot. Even better if the dealer was the one who did it.

Again, if this was certified pre-owned and you have proof that the oil was changed in the past 12 months then it shouldn't be on you. Good luck!

Wife was driving the g37 down the block going to work and the car just shut down. Engine would crank over a bunch of times but wouldn't start. I ran down with a jump start - thinking its probably the battery - was rather a cold morning and its the cars original battery. Hooked up the charger and same thing - engine would crank over but not light. So (fortunately) she was at the top of the hill in our subdivision and we were able to set it in "N" and roll it down the hill and parked in front of the house until we get off work and get a chance to look at it (again thinking the battery may have a bad cell or something and not really anything to worry about). We are also fortunate to have a spare car laying around that we could use - in fact we have a few spare cars lying around that we could lean on if needed - another story....

Hooked battery charger over night - next day same thing. Pulled some engine codes before pulling the battery to take down to my trusted Advance Auto for a diagnostic. Only code that popped up was P0340. Battery checked out good - installed old battery and cleared DTC code. Same thing - thing not starting. Decided to try to change out the camshaft position sensor - P0340 bank 1 (passenger side). Figure I should try since if thats what it was the dealer would have charged me a ****-load to change. Got a CPS and installed - same thing - no start but would probably keep cranking till Christmas.

Pulled the connector off the CPS (read it on some online forum) - and behold the engine started but ran real rough. Immediately shut it down and re-installed the original CPS and had the car towed to the local Infiniti dealer.
Sludge all up in the engine. I noted some on the dipstick while doing the CPS change along with oil crud on the sensor tube body and on the underside of the oil cap. Plus we were about 2 quarts low on oil. We've had the car for a little over a year and use a local goodyear for our service. But here's the thing - the car was not a certified pre owned Inifinti (we bought from a local Dodge dealer) - and theres no records of any routine maintenance or oil changes since 11,000 miles and then again at 40,000 miles once the car was checked out after it was sold/bought at auction. So Infiniti says they can't honor the 6yr/70k miles drivetrain warranty.

Dealer says $5500 for a new motor with 12 mo. warranty. Not sure what to do here. We owe $5k on it and with a $5.5k engine we'd be in $11.5k and have a car to drive (not to mention our down-payment $$ and a year of payments we've made on it) And then the car would have a trade in value of between $11k -$12k against a new or pre-owned infiniti (vs. the $6k its worth now with a sludgie engine).

God that sucks. I can't imagine being denied warranty coverage for something like that. I just pulled a hypothetical on NADA and a brand new motor should net you quite a bit more if traded in. You can get motors for around 1-1500 with 40-60k miles. Get a certified mechanic to install and grab some quotes for warranty coverage. Might be able to 1/2 that dealership quote.

If the original owner took it to an ASE certified mechanic would there even be a record of an oil change since it wasn't done at a dealership...? Check the owner's manual....might get lucky and find some old receipts.

RMB5190 - Thanks for the reply. Yeah the GM at Inifiniti found out a lot more about the cars history and gave us some info. The wife is checking that out and hoping to find some records at the dealership up in NJ.
Dealer quoted me an engine cost of $2400 (w/10k miles) and 22 hours labor for the replacement. I found a few engines on the interwebz between $1200 - $2000 (with varying mileage). Asking around now to find anyone that could perform the work in our area. That was my thought exactly - trying to half that cost.
I've done my version of a "cost benefit analysis" and it doesnt look too good. One option is to cut bait and pay off the $5k we still owe and park the g37 and find a buyer willing to buy. The other is to put another $5500 for a motor and payoff what we owe and then we have a car to drive that wouldnt be worth much more over that.

If you can get the engine to run, an old-school method for reducing sludge is to replace one quart of oil with one quart of ATF. It apparently has more detergents that will attack the sludge. Don't run it too long like that, though. Maybe a week, then oil and filter change.
