Need help with wheel size decision

Hey guys. I'm new here and just recently got a 2010 g37x sedan with sport package. I'm not looking to go crazy with mods yet...just wanted to do some wheels and maybe drop the car for now. I live in the Chicago area... Would 19" wheels and tires be a problem for potholes and stuff? Thanks for any info. I got some wheels and tires but they're 18" with 235/50/18. Not bad but the thickness of the rubber is bothering me a little. The ride seems to be fine. I'm just wondering if I should go 19". Here are some pics of the car now.

Maybe a lowering spring would help. That wheel gap is so big you can't help but notice the rubber.

Get a set of lowering springs and you'll fall in love with your car all over again!

And when you say "thickness of rubber" do you mean your tires are real worn or you don't like that taller sidewall?

Thanks for the reply guys. I am seriously considering dropping with swift springs for now. Should I be worried about Chicago winters being dropped from stock? This car is my daily driver. Thanks blnewt! I'll check that out. I meant the taller sidewall (brand new tires)is what's bothering me but I'm also worried about potholes if I go 19". Or would 19's be fine?

19s is fine, I was on 20s (back to 18s now, lol) and our New Mexico roads are horrible too. I'd end up using your current 18s for winter and use the new 19s for a dedicated 3 season (summer) tire. The drop combined w/ slimmer sidewall, and firm sidewall summer tires will firm it up quite a bit, but the trade off in performance and the overall look will be worth it typically.

Blnewt, why back to the 18's? I have the stock 18's for winter and I bought these as a dedicated summer wheel/tire...I have til the end of the month to change my mind. I'm worried about potholes bending the rims but I'm also worried about Chicago winters if I decide to drop the car. The ride of the 18 is very comfortable right now...maybe I just have to get used to the look?

Well, my 20s were heavy (around 30 lbs per), and I wanted a Japan built, lighter weight wheel that had a nice concave face, and be able to do a full 4 tire rotation. And fellow moderator Lt8che runs 18s on his coupe and I really liked the look. Here's my current setup, and I'm on 245/45 tires, I will go to 255s when these tires are worn.

And here's my staggered 20" setup on 245/285 tires (was running 295s in back)

Check this thread for ideas on squared (all wheels/tires the same) setups

You can run staggered on AWD but have to be much more careful on compatible tire sizing

That is really nice! I guess it's not the taller sidewall that's bothering me but the wheel gap is. Are you on coilovers?

Yep, on coils, I'm RWD so there's a few more options. For your AWD the Swifts are a good choice, you won't be as low but your transfer case can come into play if you go too low, and if your roads are as bad as you're saying you want a bit more room for error.
If you want to look into coilovers the KSport is a good choice for a lower price point and the Fortune 500s for a bit more.
