Portable USB hard drive
Portable USB hard drive
I just bought a 2011 G37 XS. I bought a USB hard drive 320 GB, copied all my music from computer to hard drive, planned on leaving the drive hooked up in the console all the time through the port. Message on screen says "Check USB Memory or IPod".
Does this car only recognize an Ipod or Iphone? How do I get my hard drive recognized and play music?
Please help!

It's not gonna work...there is nothing in the system to operate an external hard drive.
Your question was does it only recognize iphone or ipod...That is why I let you know a flash drive will work.

If it is a USB hard drive, then there doesn't have to be anything in the system to operate the drive. It is functionally no different than the flash drive/usb stick as far as the car is concerned.
My suggestion would be to check the filesystem/partition type on a flash drive that works and duplicate that onto the USB hard drive. If that doesn't work, then try dropping the partition size to the same size as the USB stick and work up until it is no longer working. There could be a maximum addressable size, or a software lockout built into the head unit.
A quick search of these forums turned up a post that claims dvix, asf, and avi video formats are supported. The USB hard drive must be formatted to fat32 and be less than 60GB in partition size.
Here is the link to that thread.

You can use an external hard drive with the a/v system. However, it does not support hard drives bigger than 120gb. Also, the hard drive has to be formatted to fat32 format. If you have a larger hard drive, create a 120gb partition.
