Daily Driver

Folks, its been a while since anyone talked about an alternative daily driver to the G. Given recent bad karma for G's, and rising gas prices, I've been thinking about picking up a reasonable decent daily driver. Any of you guys know of some good leads?

I'm going to try and take a look this weekend at the following E30 325 slammed w/ Bilsteins on Alpina's...

My bro is a hard core old school bimmer fan. I grew up w/ 2002's and a E28 535is in my driveway. BMW went soft with the E36.

Get a VW Golf or Jetta TDI. That's the one with the diesel in it. It gets 40+ city and 50+ highway and makes lots of low end torque so it doesn't feel like a dog around town. Plus with diesels, they'll last well over 250k miles so finding one with 100k miles means nothing.

Thought about that, but I'm not sure how good diesels are in the winter. Perhaps new ones are better, but I remember how a neighbor with an old MB diesel needed a heater under her car each winter morning.

Personally, for a beater, i'd simply stick with the more realiable cars like honda's and acura. It's might just be me, but the last thing i'd want to do with my beater, is spend more money on it to keep it running. Especially those cars with terrible maintance record after 100K or so, it's a big risk in my book.

Just checked out another E30 coupe. While the body looked its age ('91), the mechanicals and electronics are perfect because the owner is a professional bmw mechanic that replaced a ton of wear items w/ m3 components were possible, i.e. suspension, clutch, gaskets etc... he's driven it himself as a daily driver for a while now, so I know that he did all the work that needed to be done such that he had no reservations driving his family around in it. Really tempted right now. The guy is also a friend of mine, so he'll be able to take care of any future issues at a reasonable cost.

Yaris? John, you really are in love w/ toyota's and just fronting w/ the G... I get to drive a tC now, and while its nice, though not a lexus, it evidences a similar philosophy - isolate the driver from the rest of the world... Driving the 325 today, I was invigorated by what an engaging experience it was... those germans really know how to make a driver's car.

Negotiating on the E30 at this point... I could certainly get a "reliable" jap car, but where's the fun in that? I drove an Inf. I30 before the G, and I think I'm def. moving in the direction from comfy reliability, to more of a driver's car... flame me if you will, but in my opinion, the E30 is more fun than the G... G has tons more power and luxury, but is far from being "tossable" like the E30. And a civic? Unless it is a real SI, its gutless... I don't mean to discount reliable "beeters" at all, but they have their time and place. I just happen to be looking for a daily "driver" vs. "beeter" right now. If I were looking for the latter, I'd def. get another wagon, as it was awesome being able to haul anything.
