What is a good 5.1 - 7.1 reciever to get under 400??

I am looking for a home theatre surround sound unit that is nice sounding but wont break my pockets. I have a samsung tv with the anynet feature which is just there way of A/V devices talking, but come to find out, they dont sell samsungs recievers in the states, just their home theatre in a box.

What else should I go for in this price range? links would be very helpful. thanks!

Are you looking for just the receiver? or receiver and speakers? I have Onkyo home theater 6.1 system. Got it refurbrished directly from Onkyo for $299 .I believe they have the new 1000watt (I have the 750watt) system for around $350. This is the whole chalupa, 1000 watt receiver, 6 speakers and a powered sub. It's plenty of noise for an average room and it sounds sick if you wire it optically with a good dvd player or gaming system. Whatever you do, don't wire it with them with them L/R red/black (coaxial?) audio wire, go optical (only true surround signal). Hope this helps, check fatwallet and other deal forum for a cheap buy. My refubrished system arrive brand new without a scratch and no problem so far. If you want to demo the onkyo system, let me know.

If you just need a receiver, just get a popular brand with the most speakers output and most encoding (THX and/or DTS) as possible for the money. The rest you probably won't notice unless you're an audiophile.

Don't run it under the carpet as you'll see a lump. Try running it between the carpet and molding at the base of your walls if the wires are small enough. Just use a flat head screw driver and tuck it under there. There should be 1/4" gap enough for 2 sets of wires.

The way the room is setup, I have to run in under the carpet at ont point unfortunately. This is the only way to hook up the rear speakers. I guess you would have to see the room.

Not sure on running wires under the carpet perhap just cut a line where you want to run and then lay down the wire then reattached the carpet down. Depending on how many wires you need to run, it might get lumpy as stated above. If you got money, run Monster Cable or similar thicker gauge. Also make sure your surround(side/rear) speakers wire are equal in lenth to ensure the signal have the same distant to travel. These are just tips and probably won't be noticable if not done. Goodluck

Monster Cable is a hype and no better than the generic brand. All you need is the correct gauge wire for the distance you plan to run. Thicker wires for longer distance is recommended. I wouldn't go cutting a line in your carpet just to run wires since it's going to be impossible for you to patch up. If you do want to run it under the carpet, I'd get flat wire/cable and cut a slit behind/beneathe your tv and another one behind/beneathe your couch and using a big magnet, tie a big flat washer to some fishing line and fish it from one side to the other. After that, just pull the wire using the fishing line. Don't worry, I'll bill you later for my advice.
