It is an in-between car of Boxster S and the Carrera. It comes with 295 hp and 250 lb of torque on the wheels. The car is essentially a beefed up Boxster S with hardtop and a hatch back, with its genetics date back to the 550 from 1953 and 904 GT from 1964. It already has a nick name "Croc".

Most Carrera purists believe the Cayman design will eventually be the main stream of all 911 design; mid-engine instead of rear engine. They believe it will happen within 5 years, or as long as Porsche AG still make money from their cash cow (the 911).

Cayman S actually comes with a spec sheet more impressive than the Carrera. But Porsche AG has to limit it's performance, or at least the first couple of production years or no one will want to buy the Carrera. The test car already bested the new 997 in N'ring. However, with all the options, the Cayman S price can be upward of the low 90s. The entrance price is $61K. So it is already in the Carrera's territory as a base Carrera starts at $69K.

Rumor has it that Ruf is looking to come out their verion of the Cayman S which will be 450 hp as soon as the car becomes available. Porsche AG is also thinking to release a Club Sport version with 305 hp with light weight panels that will rival the GT3.

As it stands, the car will be released in Jan '06. Guess the earliest delivery date will be March/April if you are in the top five list. Anything over that will be looking at Oct/Nov.
