hey guys, lek and I and several others have been talking... since we had so much fun at skyline we are thinking of going back again, this time at the right time... when the leaves turn gold. Thats when skyline is at its best...

so lests get a show of interest in the form of a poll, if theres suffucient interset to go back when the leaves turn, ill set it up.

i actually enjoyed the road back home (Rte 211) MUCH better than skyline itself. Rte. 211 had less cars and was 2 lanes for passing. in addition there are no Po Po worries on 211. Not only that BUT its FREEE!! Those twisties on 211 were like no other and I loved every moment taking them.

i have learned that the leaves turn gold from mid to late OCT.
the 14th is OC, 21st is Brian's BBQ, so that leaves 28th of Oct at the tail end of the turn of leaves before they fall off.
28th of Oct it is then, after that we will be staring at some empty branches

 

What exactly is 211? Is that the exit we took right by the tunnel to leave the park? Dont you have to be in the park to take that road? I'd be interested just going on that road on its own.

 

the fun part is going down the moutain from that road, i think the best route is still via skyline drive, then down that road

 

This is what I posted about in the past. The old Cap G Club used to take 211 to Skyline Drive all the time (we did it about 5 times in our short lived time) and it didn't cost us a dime to get in. There are two rest areas on both sides of the mountain and we used to just go up and down a few times. It was great! I'm definitely down for that. And unfortunately Puria isn't exactly right about no cops on 211. When we took the road back in the day, we'd usually see on average 2-3 cops, I think once we saw no cops and another time we saw 4, 2 staked out in the median and 2 driving the other way. The good thing about going up and down the mountain on 211 is that going up it's 2 lanes so you can pass if needed but it's only 1 lane going down.

If anyone still has the maps, look for a visitor center/stop called Panorama, that's where we'd stop at the top of the mountain.

 

we can take 211 up the moutain go through the tunnel which is fun, to the next visitor center or cookout out area, have the cookout then drive back through the tunnel and back down 211

 

ya 211 was that twisty a$$ one lane road we all took going back home. literally right after the tunnel part..
