What makes direct injection better?

I understand from reading that many manufacturers are going to direct injection (for fuel) as opposed to what was used before. I am looking for clarification on what positivies this gives the output? I did read how it gives a peak torque over a range instead of at a certain rpm possibly giving a more "daily driveable car". Im sorry if the question is fuzzy. Thanks in advance for any clarification.

DI puts the fuel injector right into the combustion chamber. More precise fuel metering. Also the fuel pressure is ALOT higher for better amtomization. The fuel doesn't have to mix with the air and it doesn't have to flow into/around the intake valve on it's way into the CC. From what I see/read, it's worth about 15-20% in terms of power.
