How the G stands against the competition...on the track

Evening ladies and gens,

I haven't picked up a G as of yet, but I do plan on it this coming weekend; negotiations took 3 weeks .

Anyways, I've been looking around this and that, and I can't seem to understand why the G37S doesn't stand tall against for example, the 370Z. I do apologize if I'm missing something crucial...I'm a real amateur at this stuff. I saw a G37S...on the track...being left behind by a MazdaSpeed3 too. What's the deal here? I can imagine that the G's have a more conservative tune for smooth acceleration, etc....yes? Same motors as in the 370Z, correct? So why the difference on the track (1/4 mile, 0-60, etc.)? Weight? Tune? sorry if this topics been beaten to a pulp.

Thanks,

There is no way in Hell, excuse my language, that a Mazda beats a G37S on track or anywhere.

The driver, that's the most unreliable factor.

Had to be the driver. I just took mine to the straight track for the first time last week and didn't get "spanked" by anything. Actually had a race against a brand new 370z, had my worst start (wheel spin) and still finished on his bumper. I'm still trying to figure out the launch in my 6mt (without the VDC on) and if I had it down I would have done a lot better. BTW, we were both still bone stock...

either the mazda had work done to it ( and it doesnt take much to make them things quick), the G driver sucked, or the mazda had a good driver or blah blah blah.... too many variables. Stock for stock G will be quicker based on the driver

i can't speak for a 370z. But for a 350z, you do have a more confident feel to it. less roll, more steering feel, etc. added to the fact that of course weight plays a big factor as well. by comparison, my DE 350z with stock brakes, worn tires, koni yellows, and hotchkis sway bars felt i could push it to a higher limit than my G with 43 more hp with sport package. of course the power to weight ratio plays a big role...but i think it's also how a car behaves on the track and how it affects the driver (whether in a positive or negative way).

G's Disadvantages vs the Z:

It's heavier
Spring rates are softer
Damping is tamer
Z has more traction (wider tires) for launch

Have you driven a MS3 before? The powerband is HUGE. Same reason why a EVO/STi/Cobalt-SS and other small 4 banger turbos are quick. Oh, and they all have LSDs. The G's isn't a real LSD.

Lets not even get to the handling aspect; the Mazda will slap a G silly on a road course.

And yes, driver is the biggest factor, but those turbo cars aren't affected by DA as much either. Being able to get more power on a whim is just icing on the cake.

We started a thread reference our best track times...so far we have a few postings from some local tracks...check it out and compare the times to other cars. I think the G is a good track car and I kinda look at is as training wheels for a GTR.

We need to get you an EVO. That has more in common with the GT-R than a G in terms of driving dynamics....

don't waste your money on a G if all you're worried about is beating some riced mazda in a 1/4 mile.

ohhh. and try to get to a road course some time, you'll realize how lame drag racing is.
