It is a thought. Buy something SUV/Wagonish thats a few years old for hauling and traveling and have a funner new car for DDing that I can switch every few years. Kind of not a financially super smart way to go about cars, but honestly looking at the value of my car (that I bought a couple years old, after taking the depreciation hit..) it has already lost 3-5k in value over 2 years. Might as well just get a brand new car and pay only for the depreciation instead of the entire value of the car haha. Then if I really like the car too, can always buy it at the end.. Idk though I like trying different cars every 3-4 years.. but we will see lol.

The downside is that you don't own the car, which technically you don't until a car loan is paid of anyways but still. Personally, I like "owning" cars. It would be nice sometimes to have a little newer car but I don't know, not at this point in my life.
It also depends on when, how, and what you get a car for. My car is worth now for what I paid for it, if not a little more. That was almost a year ago and 15k miles ago to.
Just my thoughts on the whole thing lol
Edit: Another thing is yes car's go down in value over a few years typically. You just have to look at it as you paid to drive your car "x" amount of dollars over that time. In the grand scheme of things 2k a year in depreciation isn't too bad for having a nice reliable transportation method.
I don't know if I am a big fan of leasing. Yes, if you don't plan on keeping the car for more than 3 years it's not bad I suppose. Then, in theory your out just the depreciation, which would have been lost regardless.

But I don't really care. Owning a car is nice, but your going to lose money on a car no matter which way you look at it unless you buy 2-15k cars all the time. Most of the cars I want aren't in the 2-15k range so im gonna be stuck with a depreciating asset no matter how I look at it lol.I think I want to own 1 vehicle thats paid for, an old Subaru Outback or a little SUV or something and then have a nicer new car that I can upgrade every couple years thats always in warranty and good to go. I dont get tired of cars in 1 year, usually takes 2-3. If I kept cars a long time, buying would make more sense, but the fact of the matter is I dont. So I can either buy them and lose money, or lease them and lose money. Lose lose no matter which way I look at it.
Oh well, cars are a hobby. Hobbys are never money investments lol.
Not until they start throwing down sand for this guy. I want to say the last time I took the G out last year was late Nov. Going to try to squeeze in a 4.08 trip down south before the season ends. I'd rather get 18 mpg's on the HWY in a FI V8 than 27 mpg's in a NA V6. The key is to be modest enough to drive a beater 80% of the time. I'm not a huge BMW fan but it's hard to turn your cheek at something that puts out over 300 ft lbs tq at 1,500 rpm's with only a chip. Emad is on the right path with choosing a stock FI vehicle as it's so easy to unlock power.

I don't have a power craze. 300HP or thereabouts is plenty to keep me satisfied lol. And if I can get 30mpg+ i'll be happy as can be.
janik, i'm shooting for mid october..wanna get a few more miles out of the g before i store her completely
then off my headlights go to get painted! she'll have a different look to her come next year

Your talking to someone that is completely done with modding and just wants a fun practical DD that isn't 50grand plus and ahve good steering feel, a good transmission, and a good smooth engine.

But who knows. It sure is depressing driving my Accord most days of the week and then driving my G a couple days or now and then. The tint has been annoying me lately and might make an adjustment on that so I don't attract so much attention when I do drive it, or aren't as worried. I'm kinda running out of possible warnings I feel I can get lol. But a nice dd would be fun and I'm starting to feel lazier in regards to having to shift around town but we will see. Regardless I'm waiting until next year before anything happens, I do like the idea of leasing if I had a car that I could always drive. Def makes me feel better when comparing the thought that if you owned a car your always gonna take a large hit if you trade it in. The nice thing is that with my lease if I wanna run it all the way out I walk away free and clear. Even with a used car that is hard to achieve after 3 years (as janik said, with a 40K car).
