Hey guys, could some some help me out, I have a few questions/problems about my G

I bought a used 2003 G35 Coupe 6MT from a dealership almost a month ago. They stated to my friend (he was looking for a G35 as well) that the transmission was replaced. I never bothered asking so it isn't confirmed.

I did not notice anything the first 2-3 weeks but for the last week I have been hearing a slight grinding noise near the tranny/clutch area (Its nothing like gear grinding, but constant low grinding). You can hear it while your in neutral and with the clutch not being engaged. When you engage and hold the clutch down the noise disappears. I was told by a few friends that it could be my throw out bearing. Also I can hear the car whine when slowly accelerating in 1st and 2nd gear at low RPM's.

I have extended warranty for the car (3 year/36000 mile warranty - it covers all of the major parts - Tranny, Engine, Rims, Ect). I searched on the forums and people say the grinding noise in neutral while the clutch is disengaged is normal. (I don't think so cause I do not remember hearing it when I first bought it.) I would like to know if its normal or not.

Have you guys stumbled across these problems in your coupe before? If you guys could help me out that would be great. I would like to get this fixed and not have anything else break and cause more damage if its a problem.

Thanks,

Hotsauce

Wanna know what that is? Flywheel chatter. They ALL do it. Every Nissan/Infiniti with a 6MT will have a little bit of flywheel chatter. Hell, mine does it and its a 2008.

Is it really a true "grinding"...or is it more like a "chatter"??? Janik(WannabeSport) is 100% dead on with this. Every nissan clutch has a chatter....if you read up, it has a lot to do with the weight differential between the flywheel and clutch. They put a heavier 1 piece clutch in our cars JUST to try and keep the chatter down...but it doesn't all go away.

This is also the reasoning behind why if you put an aftermarket flywheel/clutch in(lightweight), the chatter itself will be very loud and noticable ...hense Travis (blue 350z supercharged) if you ever make it to one of our meets next year.

Isn't the noise exclusive to when the clutch is actually engaged to be considered "normal"?

Some of the cars I have looked at haven't had the flywheel chatter. Like said above it isn't "normal" but its very common and not worried about. If you have warranty maybe bring it in and see if they will do anything for you.

And it is going to be one LONG 240 miles home on the motorcycles today. Not looking forward to it. brrrrrr

i agree with Lance... this is something that used to **** me off and still does. i hear it more if you're on a hill (mostly downward than upward) and the clutch is disengaged. that is why i always engage the clutch as i'm shutting the car off so i don't hear that noise. i think when the car is turning off and everything is slowing down to a stop it amplifies the sound which i think is caused by something hitting as Lance explain with the weight diff and the fact that it is not normal but we have to deal with it in our cars. (long story short, if you engage the clutch as you turn it off you won't hear it.) as for the warranty, they won't do anything since the warranty covers the flywheel for only the first like 10k miles or so (maybe the first 12k can't remember). i did hear both ways on the after market flywheels tho. Travis's blue 350 is SUPER loud but might be because its SS with a light flywheel but i remember reading something about people not standing how it sounds and getting a flywheel and eliminating the sound issue on none SS G's. this is a while back when i read this so i'm not a 100% besides it would cost a little bit of change so i learned to live with it!

Are you talking about the original warranty? That has expired, I purchsed extended warranty from the dealership. Should I ask them to inspect it? Maybe they will replace the whole transmission?

yeah, depending on which extended warranty you bought, hopefully infiniti elite, you would bring it into the specified dealership and have them take a look. gluck! you might not get the entire transmission replaced, but maybe the flywheel and clutch??? that will still save you a good chunk of change though!
