Installed Injen CAI & Berk HFC. Car smells now

Hey guys I finally started to mod my car so I made an account on this page to post threads and do research as well.

This past weekend I installed both an Injen Long tube CAI and Berk High Flow cats. After installation I notice my car smells now. I read that some people get a smell after installing the HFC but not sure how bad their smell is. Also my check engine light came on and wasnt sure if thats what happens when you install the CAI and HFC. Maybe the place I went to install the parts did it wrong? Please share your experiences so I can see what to do.

Also I bought the HFC's used (not sure if that would cause the problem of the check engine light and smell).

Thanks!

Sometimes you need to extend the O2 sensor port so it won't trigger the CEL. As far as the smell, the HFCs aren't as restrictive so there may be some fuel smell getting through but should be minimal. If the HFCs have a lot of miles on them, or were on a vehicle running rich they won't do as good a job w/ reducing emissions.

Thanks for the reply I will look into extending the O2 sensor port for the CEL! Maybe I should have gotten brand new berks. The shop I got them from were selling them for $150 thats why I got them. Do you recommend I get new ones or should I go to a shop and see if the smell is coming from the HFC's?

Can a brand new intake cause the smell? Maybe it needs to break in?

new ones would smell even worse. The cats will small a little less after the break in period (or maybe you just get used to it). I couldn't bare to have test pipes on, because it gave me a headache after 5 min. I know hfc's aren't as bad, but as blnewt said, they don't do a very good job on emissions... meaning it'll smell like $&/t.

Guess to have more power I'm going to have to deal with a little bit of smell. The smell only bothers me because now it smells like I have a bad engine or that its going to die. One more question. Do HFC's lose some power if it has high mileage? Just want to know since I bought used one and don't know how many miles were put on it.

Actually... it may be even less restrictive after it gets old... so if anything, it'd prolly gain more at the expense of more emissions and smell.

There's a million threads on this. Yeah the smell is more obvious while outside of the car or for people behind you but I personally never smell it unless I'm at a light and my windows are down, even then, hardly noticeable. Are you idling in the garage or something? Also, grab a couple o2 elbows, that's what really helps rid of the CEL. Fixed mine and haven't seen it since then, about 5 months ago.

Do you think buying brand new gaskets would help? I bought the HFC's used so not sure how worn out the gaskets would be.

I tried searching for some threads before I posted this but I mainly just got threads discussing how much horsepower HFC's give. Yea I usually smell it when I stop at a red light. I'm not sure how other G37's smell with HFC's so I can't really compare how minor mine is. I will try the o2 elbows thanks!

A couple weeks back I installed High Flow Cats, in addition to the cattback I already had.

I started to notice a very slight smell. A very faint odor of vinegar or sulfur/egg smell.

I don't really mind as it is barely noticeable, usually when I have the moon roof open.

I'm going to get an orange/citrus air freshener and not worry about it.
