Air Filter Factory vs Other

I recently took my G37 to the dealer to get looked at for a hard shifting transmission. While I was there, I also mentioned that sometimes it stalls out after starting the car. They mentioned that the throttle bodies should be cleaned every 15K miles. He also mentioned that the air filters should be changed as well.

I informed him that I changed the air filters but he proceeded to say that I needed to use factory air filters from Infiniti which costs $50 (for both). He said even though the filters appear to fit, they don't have an exact fit and they let dirt through which can damage the mass airflow sensors. He also mentioned since I wasn't using factory air filters that it would void the warranty if the mass airflow needed to be replaced.

Has anyone else heard about this? I bought a Fram CA10544 Extra Guard Panel Air Filter. Should I really be concerned with replacing the air filters with factory ones? My G37 has about 46K miles on it and I usually change them every 15K or when they start to get dirty.

On a side note, the transmission issue apparently was due to the TCM and it needed to be reprogrammed. I'll have to wait and see if that fixes the issue or if it comes back.

You will be fine using the FRAM air filters. However, a popular upgrade is the R2C drop-in filters with a silicone post MAF tube for extra performance and a more audible intake howl.

Do those R2C filters work with the stock intake? Can I just buy them and put them in without any modifications?

That is correct, they are meant to work with your stock intake boxes. If you do a quick google search of the part #, you will find more users talk about them over on the 370z forums.

I just buy OEM filters off amazon or ebay for about 30 bucks a pair. Work well for me.

OEM is ok but restrictive and afe is great which is what I was looking at but will try R2C as they are cheaper.

This service guy is more full of **** than Trump. TB's do not need to be cleaned out and filters don't need to be changed every 15k on any car under normal suburban/city conditions unless your driving it 24/7 in the dessert or salt flats. My car has 100+k and never had the TB's cleaned, I could tell. I cleaned them and it changed nothing.

He is saying all that to sell parts and service. I once had a service guy tell me my aftermarket filter system on my 3rd gen RX7 was why it didn't start. B.S. Was on the phone with Peter Farrell and had it started in 5 min. Drove it off the lot and they told me it had been stolen. I let them sweat a while since they told me to tow it in after I said I didn't want to hear that the filter was the problem. $tealer.

If this guy is that much of an azz hat then swap in your old filters and take it in for service. These filters can be changed in under 30 seconds for both. MAF sensors can be cleaned using contact cleaner. Done it a dozen times in the old days when K&N oil got on them.

Search for transmission reprogram here. I believe sometime in 2012 they changed programs and it transforms the drive-ability. I did it and it was very noticeable. Don't let them charge you an hour labor as it takes less than 30 min max to do it. $tealer.

Interestingly enough, I just had this happen to me two times in a row today to my '11 G37S LE! It's never happened to me before. I went to visit a friend at the hospital and came out 30 minutes later and started the car. The revs went up and started coming down at the same speed like usual except they just kept going down until the engine stopped. I tried it two more times and on the third time I revved the accelerator at the time it hit 1000 RPM and the engine revved and leveled out normally.

If you ever figure out what caused it please let me know!

Me too...Genuine Inifiniti Air Filter Element Set 16546 JK20A Pair G35 G37 QX50 Q60 | eBay

I just bought a set because the NAPA Gold pair I have installed now will need to be swapped out soon (I replace at 10-12K miles as the air in Socal is filthy/cabin Filter as well - cheap insurance).

The dealer always hassles me about the use of "paper" filters and says they do not filter as well as OEM (which they claim are oiled?) I let them speak their peace and casually roll my eyes when they are not looking. They mean well.

The R2Cs definitely look better than OEM (the Harley Davidson of air filters), but I honestly don't think there is much to improve upon here....the air box on the G37 is fairly optimal in its design.

So you think I may just need the transmission reprogrammed? My car is a 2013, not sure if change in 2012 would have made it to my car.

Yea the dealers are a bunch of $tealers. Unfornutely there is only 1 within 50 miles of me so unless I want to drive 1+ hour to a different dealer (and probably deal with the same crap), I'm stuck with these guys.

Your trans should be included in the change. Here is some lite reading for you:
https://www.myg37.com/forums/g37-sed...reprogram.html

Sometimes a Nissan $tealer will help you. Their parts are usually cheaper from what I have found. The one on the North side of Indy here is good about knowing what parts are the same also. For something like a trans reprogram they will not have the ability.

Tps ??

I'm new a new G37x owner but reading this it sounds like an issue I was having with my Grand National, the TB cleaning BS. Turned out my car had this throttle position sensor (tsp) that screwed into the TB. I backed it out being carful because it's basically a spring, sprayed with brake cleaner, dried it and put it back in. Issue solved.

Btw, my G is sweet, who knew

That sounds like a nice solution. :-)

Just put the R2C's in the other day. Probably placebo, but I'll be damned if I can't feel a difference in throttle response. I am thinking of maybe doing a full intake in the fall just because. It looks pretty easy. Only have another month or two of "work on car time" before summer takes hold and the garage becomes the ninth layer of DFW summer hell.
