Input on your Intakes

I was originally planning to get a Stillen Gen 3 intake (or similar) for my '13 G37S sedan, but a lot of you have said your intakes create a lot more sound than power. I like the way my car sounds with the Stillen exhaust and I am sure it will be louder with the headers and free flow cats. Is it a mod worth doing, or does it make the car extremely loud?

I know Stillen claims 14hp at the wheels and aFe/Takeda lists a 19hp gain for their intake. K&N usually claims about a 5hp gain for their drop in filters. Couldn't I just do K&N drop in filters and gain about 10hp (not much less than Stillen) for a whole lot less money and time and keep it quieter if the aftermarket long tube intakes are really loud?

Thanks!

tbh i don't think the intakes gain any noticeable power. I have the Injen ones and they are damn loud, but i didn't notice any power gains.

In fact, occasionally at redline its SO LOUD that it causes stuff in the cabin to rattle.

You're content with how it sounds now, I'd say leave well-enough alone, and assess things after your next few exhaust mods. Then pick up this project again before getting the car tuned.

At some point the decible levels in your exhaust will make any intake noise irrelevent.

From: Framingham Ma,
I like my Takeda's and gain some WHP , but honestly I can remember what it sounded like, LOL I'm fully bolt so exhaust is a little louder than the intakes

BTW if you decided to go headers and HFC's I might have headers and HFC's for sale , headers are less than 2 months old and cat's will be a week old,

Thanks for the offer, but I already have the parts. They should go on soon, but I have been dealing with drilling a set of wheels to fit that took way longer than I ever imagined.

Your exhaust will probably be louder than your intake (it is for me). Right now I have fast intentions resonated high flow cats with Stillen gen 3 and I don't hear the intakes at all. If you are stock with stillen gen 3 you only hear them when you step on it (usually after 3k rpm)

That is good news. I was wondering about how loud the intakes would be considering the other mods I have. I would assume the intakes will not seem too loud with the Stillen exhaust, high flow cats, and headers?

I'm in agreement that intakes are mostly noise makers and that drop ins (I run aFe) and post MAF silicone tubes (I run Cobb) will get you 75% of the gains at 25% the cost.

Remove the hood liner for added sound.

Yeah you guys are not really selling me on the idea of an intake. The whole- need to remove the bumper to service the filter- thing does not sound so great either. Well lots of time to decide as I need more important parts 1st so the car does not implode on the track- like brake pads, an oil cooler, and sticky tires.

Who knows- I might get bored this summer and decide to do an intake plenum and tune with the intakes because- RACECAR.

Any other thoughts about intakes?

If you're into engine bling... aftermarket intakes can look really, really cool.

Particularly the dual-TB design used in the VQHR.

Oh yeah, how could I forget about vanity as a good reason? But seriously, I probably will bite the bullet at some point and end up getting one once I get all this racecar stuff out of the way.

Just curious why youre getting rid of your setup, did you like the hfc? I am debating on getting them for the gains but I think I am lowering my car first.

I suppose vanity is one way to describe it. However, it's all under the hood, so whatever pride in appearance you might have, it's primarily a personal thing.

Then again, I did just show you a picture...

Can't really get through the day without one good rationalization.

i never removed my bumper to put the Stillen Gen3 on or to service the filters..
i just put velocity stacks on my Gen3 as it suppose to smooth out the air coming in and make more power..

Do you gain access through the top or do you take out the grille? Any pics of the velocity stacks and can you still use the rain guard with those?
