New to Forum and Intake Questions

Hello,

So I'm new to the forum of course. I'm a previous 2nd gen MR-2 owner and decided to forego that project and get a nice daily driver. I have a 2013 G37 Journey Sedan. Not looking to get into any huge crazy projects but rather small subtle changes. First on my list is an intake system. Cold air or short ram? What brand is going to give me some nice gains as well as nice sound? I'm depending on the experts here!

Thanks.

i was going to get an intake, but decided not to.

1. they're expensive - dual intakes, and in some cases, dual filters for the G

2. loose some low end torque for some higher rpm hp. i'd rather have the torque.

3. short ram=suck up hot engine compartment air, cold air = need to take front bumper off, etc. to clean filter

if you really like sucking/whooshing sounds or the look in the engine bay, go for it. not worth it IMHO. im gonna get some R2C drop in filters when the factory ones need replaced. the stock airboxes make it so easy to access the filters, it would be a crime to remove them. stock setup is practically a cold air setup anyway, drawing air from the high pressure area in front of the radiator. unless you are running turbo or SC, im sure the stock airboxes flow more air than the engine needs.

An entirely correct and well phrased response. I got an LT CAI because I like the way it looks - all the while whispering to myself that I would get some performance gains.

Have I any gains? Don't know, I haven't had it on a dyno yet. Without that, it's just a theory on my car.

Others may join in with more concrete responses.

i had one on my Evo (with a stage 1 map), and shortly after purchasing it, Cobb Tuning said it wasnt necessary unless stage 2 or above. at $150, not a big deal for 10 minute install, easier-to-access filter and cool whooshy noises and more audible factory BOV noise.

at $400+ for a G, with a PITA install/maintenance, um... nope.

From: Framingham Ma,
Cold air intake, Short tubs suck hot air, Takeda, Z1 and AAM intakes all have similar design and I didn't remove my front bumper to install my takedas and would bet the Z and AAM you dont either. An really ^^^ you don't have 10 mins to remove the filter to clean it, that's a PIA , Gess , LOL

in English?

yeah, some may not require bumper removal or cutting, but my main reasons for not getting an intake are still loss of low end torque and price.

Low end TQ loss what like 3WTRQ :/ I'm sure you can feel that. And the only ones I would think you have to cut for are the Stillens. To each their own,

All great advice! From what I gather, the SR is all show and a bit of sound for no gain and possibly loss of torque. Cold air might be the better route but could involve some unwanted labor. Hmmm... maybe the intake isn't the best place to start lol. Thanks for all of the tips though.

but you can feel the 3hp gain?

i'll probably go with R2C black mesh drop-ins and silicone tubes to maybe block some of the heat from our convection oven engine bay.

VQ37VHR is designed with twin intakes! I bet it's pretty well optimized as is.

I went with the stillen gen 3 because I prefered the way they looked in the engine bay but the were rather pricey and took a few hours to install for very few gains... $550 for the intakes $250 for the powder coating but the look difference was worth it to me but maybe not for everyone

Stillen Gen 3 -- LOVE THEM!!!! Did NOT remove the front fascia to install or to clean filters. I do remove the radiator core support plastic cover and am able to do everything thru that opening. They are worth the little extra time for maintenance.
