To buy or not to buy? (K&N Typhoon CAI)

My original plan was to wait on a CAI and just purchase drop-in filters for the time being seeing as the stock system is basically already a CAI. I was planning to later add gen 3s after I completed the mods I felt were "necessary". I have done a decent amount of research on both our stock intakes and these K&N Typhoon intakes, but don't know where I stand on them at the moment..

From the looks of it, the Typhoon looks more like a SRI rather than CAI, so would I likely even see power gains? Would I actually lose HP since it looks like it would be drawing in hotter air? Reading 100's of reviews, people seem the have mixed opinions on the power gains, but purchased more for sound. I don't care much about sound for the time being, and would rather focus on gains. I have long-term plans, but seeing as it's a new-to-me car I don't mind putting a couple quick mods on that I might change out later.

With that being said, I found a local deal for these, brand new, for around $200, and was wondering if it would be worth spending the extra $100 for this system rather than just the drop-ins for now? I already contacted the owner and he told me he would hold them for me for a few days. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I wouldn't pay more than that for the K&N Typhoon. But for only $200, look at it as a fun little project, that will net you a whole bunch of noise.

Nothing wrong with that. The butt-dyno reacts well to noise.

Okay good to know. I was looking around and it seemed like a pretty good deal, being brand new.

Do you know anything about power loses? I wasn't expecting to gain much/anything (but the other option was drop-ins lol) but if I'll lose anything I'll just pass on them. I've installed a few intakes before so I don't see it being a hassle to do.

Where are you getting these new for 200$? The link says almost 400.

I've ways wondered why people pay 500 or so for intakes. There are cheap knockoffs out there for far less, just get k&n filters on them an end up with the sound and good filtration for much much less. Is it just for the name? I mean the rest is basically an air pipe, or is it really worth the extra $?

I have them. There is not power gain or loss that I can notice. I've had them for nearly two years. They stock until you hit 3000 rpm. At that point the motor is louder and sounds better than stock.

I installed the K&N CAI a couple of months ago and my butt dyno has responded pretty well to it. Plus, it just sounds like a beast now. Took my friends and I a couple hours just because we kept dropping tools into the damn engine bay...

Haha I extend all of my jobs by either dropping tools or forgetting where I put them.
I just ordered a slightly used k&n cai for 200$ but mainly for the look and sound. I'm sure my button dyno will see some gains too

Button dyno? That was a little too specific, but whatever works for you, man.

I have the k&n. It's pretty legit. I regret not getting the G3 or even z1 has one now that does the same thing.

Butt dyno approves but I also had my car tuned at z1 motorsports and the guy said I should be making a little more than I was. At the time I was at 300whp but he said my set up plus a G3 intake is usually 306. But with all this said $200 is a damn steal!!! And yes it adds a lot of noise past 3000 rpm. Great price but for me even at $200, I wish I would of bought any brand intake that has filters in front of radiator. But that's just me

K&N says this system gives 14 WHP:
2009-2012 Nissan 370Z and 2008-2012 Infiniti G37 Gain Estimated 14 HP with K&N Air Intake System

Has anyone dynoed before and after?
14 WHP would be a noticeable gain.

Highly doubt that. 14 hp is believable but absolutely no way 14whp. I have intake, exhaust, hfc, plenum, tune ect and only made like 30 or so whp

I don't believe that either 14 seems too much

Let me add this...

The Stillen intake gives 14 WHP and on sedan and 18.5 WHP on the coupe:
https://blog.stillen.com/2008/12/sti...sedan/#more-86
Looking at the dyno, the 14WHP is from 6,500 - 7,500 RPM. From 3,000 to 5,500 it is about 5 WHP.

Also, the K&N drop in filter gives about a 5WHP increase on the 370.
I would expect the G37 to be the same.

Something to think about!
