First Mod-CAI

I'm new to modding and upgrades but this is going to be my first upgrade. I was looking at spending no more than 400-500$ and I decided to look into CAI. After some research i saw that RC2 and Injen were good options because they were easier to install and a little cheaper than the Stillen Gen 3. If anyone has any suggestions I have a 2008 G37s coupe...and a link to where i could purchase one would be appreciated as well.

R2C is a Short Ram, and Injen makes a long tube and a Short Ram, I'd look at the Takeda, it's an easier install, and cheaper than the Gen3 but still a true Cold Air Intake.

Great first mod. Performance>looks! R2c are the easiest to install out of the other 2 you mentioned. Although an Injen, gen3, or takeda (not mentioned, but imo the best of all the cai) prove to have better increases than a shorter tube cai. I helped thirty_seven yesterday install his takeda cai and it's so easy to do. I think you should go with takedas (440$ shipped on eBay) or Injen. Pm me if you are in NYC or tristate area for install help.

You might want to do some research on CAI. I was looking at that for my first mod but in the research I have done, it seems that you get little performance gains, if not a performance loss of ~5 horse power.

ORiginal Poster you need to look hard at the takeda Long Tube CAI. This was also the first mod I choose to do. The great things about doing a CAI on your 1st mod and going with the Takeda LTCAI on your 1st mod are as follows:

It runs about $300-330 (so cheaper than your other selections)
A little tip I learned the hard way on buying the Takeda is MAKE SURE you either get the Takeda filter shield included or order one along with the LT CAI's.

It's a super easy install. Just remove the bolts off your bumper, remover bumper, remove old Air intakes, place old ones in a box, install new LT CAI's, and put your bumper back on. I may have forgotten one step (like taking off the engine cover) but you get the idea. It's easy.

It requires no cutting and all the parts slide right in. I was a total newbie when I did this project. Like I had NEVER done anything to a car myself except change a tire. Entire removal and install took me about 2.5-3hrs. But I was a bit skiddish about everything. My guess is an experienced modder could do it in under an hour easy, so if your new I would shoot for 1.5 hrs and expect 2 or more.

The sound....OMG It makes such a fabulous difference in your engines sound. Nuff said IMO

The power....it makes more power than you might think. I have no idea exactly what it gains you but my car after the Takeda LT CAI install felt more like a freight train rather than the G37 I had gotten used to over the first few months. Let's just say I was more than pleased
Btw it's been on for almost a year now and I still hear and feel the diff the Takeda makes and it still manages to make me smile a bit when I hit the gas. Because well, I did that ya know. Doing the work you can do yourself makes a much bigger difference than just saving you money. It adds in mega pride in your car and in yourself.

Last tip I wanna add is don't be afraid to go ahead and look around on the classifieds on this site for a slightly used Long Tube intake system. Be advised if you don't get the Takeda you need to still get a Long Tube system if you want to get the most out of it. If you get the Stillen you'll have to make some cuts in the guts of your ride to make it fit.
But anyway the reason I suggest looking for used high quality parts is bc a good friend of mine once told me that if you buy used high quality parts you can generally expect to be able to sell those parts again one day in the future for around 80% of what you paid. I now know this to be absolutely true. So take your time and prowl the PC's whenever you can. Great prices on sought after items get snatched up at light speed. So you gotta get there first to call dibs.

Good luck with all your mods man.

Should there be any worries if you live somewhere where it rains a lot with a long tube intake? I am looking into Takeda for my '11 g37

I now recall the correct name of the "filter shield" I was referring to earlier. It's actually called the splash guard. So hells yes, if you live somewhere where it rains a lot DEF get the splash guard. The guard will also help defend against any other junk the might want to get to your filter and thus possibly get to your engine. Buy the guard. Buy it at the same time as the LT CAI too. You don't wanna be like me and have to take your bumper off to install the CAI then have to remove it yet again when you get your splash guard in the mail.

Check the vendor section of the site to find vendors who sell EVERYTHING for our G's. Most of the time they will even give us G owners discounts for being members of the G37 site. Happy modding everyone

To continue with the discussion of LT CAI, if adding/removing a splash guard requires removal of the bumper, how easy (or not) is changing the air filter? Not sure that I want one if I am having to drop the bumper multiple times per year. (I average about 2k miles a month)

You'd just have to remove the grill, it's a bit of a pain the first time but once you know what to do it takes about 5-10 minutes.

I haven't had to change mine yet and I've had it on for a little under a year. I believe a little research into the product will tell you how often it "recommends" changing out or washing the filter. Some of them can be cleaned rather than changed, but either way your right your looking at spending a little time with the maintenance. But like anything on your car that is worth having...it's worth maintaining.

Blnewt can you help me find a good price on the Takeda LTCAI for the OP plz? I did some searching and I located the site I purchased mine from a year ago, but the price has soared to $499!
