USELESS parts in filter boxes? What are they for?

You can see the parts of the filter boxes from the sedan. They don't look like they serve any purpose. The air doesn't go thru them so what are they for? Sound effects, resonance, heat collection? My coupe doesn't have those installed. So what are they doing there?

I've hooked up a shop vac to the boxes to imitate the suction and I did not get any indication they do anything mechanically so maybe a sound mod or temperature mod? One of the containers has a small [1/2 inch round] membrane in the middle of it. It doesn't open nor close. I think we need a GURU here.

it's usually for resonating the sound....SOMETIMES the stock filter also has a reservoir just incase it accidentally sucks up any water...but usually there's a hole at the bottom of it to allow the water to drain out....but most new cars the intake is closer to the top of the engine, so no chance for sucking in water

So this would mean only sedans have those for a more sublime sound. Is there anybody with the coupe having these parts? Is it justifiable for the factory to spend this kind of money on parts which just resonate? We need a specific answer. You guys in the Middle-East or Australia, do you have those on your coupes?

LOL that was a good one!

My guess is that they are intake resonators. My civic used to have something similar. Simply used to diminish the sound made by the intake. Probably only used on the sedan and not to coupe to give the two door a sportier sound...
