The Intake Review Thread

Intakes being reviewed:
HKS Drop-In Filters, JWTs, Stillen 3G, and Injen.

HKS Drop-In Filters
Compared to Stock Filters
Name: 2HKS.jpg
Views: 115
Size: 67.8 KB

Pros: Cheap, Non-Oil Based, Extremely Easy Install, Lifetime Usage (Reusable).
Cons: No extra sound like other short-ram and cold-air intakes provide.
Ease Of Install: 1/10, it's that easy.
My Experience/Input: These are def a great choice for those who do not want to spend too much on an intake, when I had these, the car pulled MUCH more smoother over stock. Not much can be said here, because after all they are just drop-in filters.

Jim Wolf Tech Short Ram Intake (JWT)

Size: 19.7 KB
Pros: Easy Install, No possible way of hydrolocking, Mean sound, Power gains in upper RPM.
Cons: Filters turn grey, oil-based filters, No JWT label.
Quality/Fitment: Quality IMO, is pretty solid except for the heat shields. Fitment, it is known that JWT's have fitment problems with the passenger side and the connecting bracket. So beware of this... Also, my filters over time changed from a beautiful ocean blue, to a dull blue to black in a matter of weeks...

Ease Of Install: I would rate this a 3/10 because of the passenger side bracket.
My Experience/Input: When I had these, I felt a loss down low to mid range, and at times it felt "sluggish". Also, the sound didn't start to pick up till around 4.5K-5K, and at that point, is when I felt gains, if any. This intake kind of makes the G37 sound like a beefy V8

Stillen 3G Cold Air Intake
Pros: Sexy look under the engine bay, looks even better when looking through the grille, AMAZING sound, and great power gains.
Cons: Installation, cutting in to the air inlets, location of filters.
Quality/Fitment: Quality, can be improved, after looking at my Stillens after a week of owning it, I noticed the sloppy welds. Fitment was even worse because of the cutting of holes, and it seems that one side is higher than the other.
Ease Of Install This requires the bumper off, I did it with the bumper ON, be prepared to have 4-5 hours of your day to install this carefully. I would rate this 8/10.
My Experience: This intakes PULLED very hard through the power band, I was simply shocked. The sound is unreal when it reaches higher RPM's. I felt the car more responsive and quicker, as it didn't have that "lag" feeling most of us get with the stock intakes. Some people are concerned with the location of the filters, well don't be, let me explain. A couple of months ago, I was driving in the HEAVY rain, and I mean it was pouring to a point where I couldn't see the road. I was freaking out about my intakes and thought what will happen if it sucks too much water in. Well, I was tripping over nothing, when I got to school and parked in the parking lot, I checked the filters and it was dry as it could be, only the filter shields were a LITTLE wet, which means it does the job! Only problem, I have with the Stillen 3G intake is the idea of too much air velocity coming in to the grille, and the idea of blocking the radiator. With this said, this can lead to the possible idea of running "lean" due to this high velocity of air coming in to the grille. Don't believe me? Check your A/F reading with your Stillens, I bet you your going to be in the high 14's.

Injen Cold Air Intake
Pros: Sexy look under the engine bay, sound, power gains through power band.
Cons: Less washer fluid.
Ease of Install: It took a friend and I almost 4 hours to install it with the bumper fully off, but overall it was fairly simple, no cutting or anything out of the norm. I would rate this a 5/10.
Fitment/Quality: Quality, is simply AMAZING, welds are solid, and the craftmenship put in to it is amazing. I did not have any problem with the fitment, as everything was breeze.
My Experience/Input: To be honest, at first when I drove with them, it felt a little sluggish, but after 2-3 minutes of driving, all I had to say to my friend was holy ****. The sound starts around 3-3.5k on the RPM, and I feel the power from down low to up top. The sound is close to that of Stillens 3G, but in a different league than JWT's. I was surprised to hear the sound so low in the RPM unlike the Stillen's. Some people are concerned with the location of the filters, well all I gotta say is, unless you are in a flood with 4ft or higher, you should be FINE. Washer fluid? Are you serious? Who the heck uses this thing anyways? Well for those who are concerned, DON'T BE, the replacement bottle is big enough and I promise you, you won't even finish it in a year's span. Location of Horn? Please, it took me literally 2 minutes to move it... put these lame and weak agruments to REST!

Conclusion
Wow, after a ton of intakes and putting them to the test, I would say, Injen takes this as the winner. It has the looks, quality, perfect fitment, and most important power through the entire RPM. Injen's R&D of this intake is near perfect as it truly produces the most power on the market currently and I hope to erase any fears of anyone on the fence on buying Injen. I also hope that I helped anyone make a decision between these intakes. For the record, I have my OEM wheels on for all the testing. I will have a dyno of Injen shortly, in a week or two once I finish with midterms.

For those concerned with the A/F readings, please check out this thread, and you will know why Injen beats every intake on the market, https://www.myg37.com/forums/intake-...ntake-pic.html

Thank You's
I would like to thank Gamedog, for helping me out with the Injen process, thanks bud!
I would like to thank Ivanballer24, for helping me with the install, and taking the time to do so.
Also, I would also like to thank Joe aka jnguyen for convincing me to get these intakes.
Lastly, I would also like to thank the SFV G Group for being supportive of their leader and helping me out.

On a side note...here is what to come.... HOPEFULLY

since you pretty much got every intake in the market, you need to do a review on the 2 new additions, STATUS ELITE and HKS RACING SUCTION KIT(if ever released) and ARC

Nice review

Well think about it, Injen MSRP is 700+, so I don't think Status Elite is going to be 700+. Remember, you pay for what you get for, QUALITY. I am impressed that Status Elite is going after the top dogs like Blitz, ARC, and Top Secret instead of Stillen, Injen, and etc.
