Questions for Neal on sedan tires

I notice that 235/55/17 is a popular size tire.

Compared to the 225/55/17, it goes 1.6% faster because the circumference is bigger. 60 miles per hour on the speedometer is really 61 mph with that tire.

From the perspective of the driver, how different would the 235/55/17 feel compared to the 225/55/17? With a slightly taller sidewall, would it take bumps more smoothly? With a slightly wider footprint, would it handle materially worse? Would there be a road noise difference? A performance difference?

I assume that if a 245/50/17 would fit our sedans, then a 235/55/17 would also fit, correct?

The following tires come in 235/55/17

Extreme Contact DWS
Wide Oval Indy
Sport Maxx TT
Pilot Sport AS+
GMAX AS-03
S.Drive
ADVAN Sport
AVID ENVigor

and many others.

Are you saying I was wrong to post a tire question for Neal on this forum? Or that I would have better luck getting a response with a PM? Not sure the point of your reply.

I highly doubt you'll feel or see the half inch difference between the two sizes. The tires you choose will have more of an impact in this case than size. If we were talking the difference between a 225 and 245 I'd say it would be noticeable. They are a tad taller than a 245/50, but not by much.

So of the two (235/55 vs 245/50), which would you tend to recommend? Or again, does it depend on the tire?
