For someone like me that doesn't know about cats that well...if we get just the pipes or resonated pipes it will sound worse because that "cardboard" stuff isn't in there?

 

Please don't get confused of what is inside of the core of an HFC. It consists of a 300 cell metallic core within a spun stainless steel shell.

Different options include:

-Test Pipes (just pipes)
-Resonated Test pipes (Pipe with 8" resonator)
-HFCs (300 cell core)
-Resonated HFCs (300 cell core, followed by an 8" resonator)

The substrate certainly impacts the tone of the exhaust, similar to a resonator, but in a far more restrictive way. FAST INTENTIONS makes a resonated Test Pipe, if you want to go that route.

Of course, without the substrate, you'll likely smell the sulfur in your exhaust (rotten eggs), and you'll be polluting the environment more than otherwise. (Even though, admittedly, the ethics of pollution considerations are a slippery slope of twisted rationalizations.)

Please go research catalytic converters.
