This right here is one of the major problems with families these days. The kids expect to be rewarded with material things if they "are good" or "get good grades". They should be doing those things without being rewarded. It shouldn't be "do this and you get a car". It should be "do this and you get to better yourself for the future". A car won't last forever, but a good education and teaching the right values will.

For the original poster, congrats! Enjoy the car, don't wreck it and keep a good head on your shoulders. But also don't always expect to be rewarded for doing a good job at things. That is not how life always works.

Oh and yes, I know all about AP classes. Had to deal with them myself way back in high school. High school is NOTHING like college.
I agree with you 99%. But I do think you need to reward them with small material things from time to time. I think from a kid's perspective, he/she needs to see some sort of immediate return, not just a hypothetical explanation that you reap what you sow. But damn, a $40K+ car is a bit overkill IMO...not that I'm not happy for her. My future kid will be lucky if he/she gets a car half that value.

My boy will be getting a civic as his first car (14+ years from now) and he will have skin in the game. Not total ownership but it's hard to fully appreciate things when they're just handed to you.

Heck, I graduated with a BS Degree in Civil Engineering and didn't even receive one congratulatory card from any of my worthless relatives, LOL!

Wow, I couldn't imagine getting a $40k car as my first car!! Mine was a 92 Honda Civic LX and I LOVED it!! Haha. Seriously though, alot of kids end up wrecking that first car so I find it a little odd that you got a G. I mean the G can be a handful (especially on a wet road) and for someone who is just learning to drive, 330 hp might not be the best route to go.....

I am 18 and I have wrecked my first car but it wasn't my fault that accident was 2 years ago. Now I drive more carefully, but the damage has already been done.
