Ester Oil

I have read some threads in this forum about ester oil but didn't find the answer I was looking for. Anyone know if ester oil is necessary for the g37s? The manual doesn't mention ester oil. Some people say its supposed to be better and prevent knocking while others use fully synthetic oil and not the ester oil.

What are your opinions and would it harm the car in the long run if ester oil isn't used? Do you guys use ester oil and can I wait longer between oil changes with ester oil?

Not necesssary. It was recommended by infiniti as a method to get rid of valve noise that some people complained about.

Point in fact, intiniti dealers put in 'non-ester oil' when you get an oil change with them....

You do the math . . .

Depends on the dealer and oil you select. My dealer uses Nissan Ester.

Spoke to my dealer last week about this, he asked what year car I had (2011) and said that for 2011 its not required. Assuming that he meant other years it might have been required, I checked the owners manual for 2010 and noted the same text as in the 2011 manual: Nissan suggests using <yada yada yada>

I brought up this question on Bob is the Oil Guy, and the consensus seems to be to run a decent (name brand, not store brand) synthetic and change it every 3750 to 4K miles as suggested by Nissan. I read that Pennzoil Ultra and Valvoline SynPower have been certified by the manufacturers to fulfill the Nissan ester requirement, so I figure I would choose one of those two in 5w-30 and change it out every 3750/3 months. Still cheaper than the dealer and probably lots better protection than the Nissan ester stuff.

My first oil change was at 3,000 miles using Redline 5W-30. Now at 8,900 miles, the oil is still not dirty...almost as good as new. In my case, it would be a waste of money to change every 3750 miles. For me, changing oil every 7500 miles make more sense.

</yada>

The color or cleanliness of oil means almost nothing in regards to how much protection is left in it. The 3.7L is known for being hard on oil.....the only true way to know is to get a used oil analysis on your oil

I would definitely change oil every 3750 miles if I use dino oil. Since I don't track, am using good synthetic ester oil, and the owner's manual suggest every 7500 is fine, I feel comfortable changing every 7500 miles. However, I will not exceed 7500 mile interval as it might void the warranty.

I recently changed to ester oil from whatever the hell the dealer was putting in my car and the morning start ups are alot better. And I seem to be getting better gas mileage. If I didnt let them talk me into getting the maintenance package(RIP OFF) I would most likely be using redline.

If your have read some threads and didnt find the answer, then you havent read enough threads. A simple search of "ester oil recommended" or "ester oil required" will give you more than enough information of 3+ years of discussion, debate, and scientific evidence.

In conclusion, I also only use Redline 5w30 for break in and will be changing to a synthetic ester based group 4 oil once break in is finished. The only time ester oil was in my car was when it came from the factory and my free first oil change. Read through the blackstone thread and look at the UOA's. You should be able to tell who know's what they are talking about and who just drinks the kool aid after a few threads.
