Almost any place that sells motor oil will recycle your used oil abd filters- Wal-mart, Autozone, Pep Boys, Advance, O'reilly etc.

I thought everyone got free dealer maintenance for at least a year when they bought he car. Just me?

There's a world of differing opinions on the subject, but as a guy who has broken down an engine or two my opinion is that not only is it not necessary, but it's actually not good to switch to synthetic too quickly. I probably won't until after 20K but I'd guess it's probably safe after about 7K to 10K. If you are one of those people who insist that it's necessary for you to change your oil every 3K miles (it isn't) then you are throwing your money away and getting zero benefit from using synthetic. Change the oil every 10K and the filter every 5K.

Hey why should one wait till 20k or so to switch to synthetic? why not the first change at 3750? Ive never understood that? Also other than longetivity doesnt synthetic lube more consistently too? Some people report revving a little faster and smoother and smoother idling with synthetic? is that all BS?

From what I hear you want the oil to bond with the engine and fill in every crevice. Once that happens (after about 10K) then it is ok to go synthetic.

I purchased the 5 year maintenance from the "stealership" (yea yea I know...flame suit is on).

I'm coming up on 1200 miles but if my "scheduled" oil change is at the recommended 3750, would that mean I have to pay out of pocket for the 1200 mile oil change? I'm not sure how stringent the dealerships are about taking the car in when it's "out of cycle" so to speak. Anyone know?

Sorry to the OP for thread jacking.

Since you bought the maintenance plan from them, they'll probably be strict on the cycle (otherwise it costs them more $ if you get it at 1200 & setup your own "cycle").

I bought the 75K maintence package also. The book says 3750 for the first one. I will let the dealer worry about it. I'll just keep it on schedule.

Whatever the manual says is all you have to do to maintain warranty coverage -- meaning Nissan feels it is adequate to stand behind the engine.

That said, the manual says 3750 or 7500 depending on your usage. It also says *any* SAE 5W-30 will do just fine with no mention of avoid synthetic or whatever.

IMO, Advice to the contrary is subject to some future mythbuster's episode

just use a high quality non-synthetic. i don't think so many service manager would tell you to avoid synth. for the fist 10k if there wasn't some reason for it for the vqs.

i'd never heard of such a thing before either. some manufacturers load up synthetic out of the factory, so i don't know the specifics of why the nissan vq is different, but i'd rather be safe than sorry.
