Infiniti G/Nissan Z getting stolen

Hello G community -
I thought, i mention is here before its too late.
I see on the reddit posting r/G37 or r/infiniti a lot of posting of infinti/ Nissan Z getting stolen and abused on the streets, so far the posting I've seen are mostly in California. However it's a matter of time before this speads over the county. I see these kinda posting more and more these days and its kinda worries me out here in the West.

here an an example
https://www.reddit.com/r/G37/comment...destroyed_and/
https://www.reddit.com/r/G37/comment..._a_killswitch/
https://www.reddit.com/r/G37/comment..._a_killswitch/
https://www.reddit.com/r/G37/comment..._after_a_well/

I dont know how our cars are getting stolen but some posting say that that there an aftermarket software that allows people to clone our keys or something of that matter.
There was a video posted where some kid broke the sunroof and got inside.

This reminds me of the time when Nissan Maxima 2002/2003 headlight were getting stolen with minutes, This worries me, people are saying install a "Kill switch" but i don't how that would help

Any thoughts

Thanks
J

Good topic to spread awareness.

The method I’ve seen that seems to be gaining traction is to use an Autel KM100 (either stolen from a locksmith or bought online and loaded with pirated Nissan Consult software). This method uses the Autel device, the car’s OBD port, a blank key, and a process called “all keys lost” (search it on YouTube) to clone a key and start the car.

In a minute or two, a thief can smash a window (commonly the sunroof), plug into your OBD port, clone the key and drive off with your car.

Highly recommend that G owners install several forms of anti-theft measures, including a combination of mechanical and electronic locks. They say there are no true anti-theft measures, so making your car enough of a hassle to steal is the goal. Even if your car is garaged, perhaps it’s left unattended for hours while you’re out and about. Even if unlikely, that’s plenty of time for an opportunist to come along. Then you see your car get run into the ground in some takeover video for precious likes on the gram…

I saw that post on the G37 subreddit as well. I’m confused on the motive. Steal a car, film a takeover video and count likes? Seems that the risk/reward tradeoff is skewed.

Since the hack involves a tool intended for locksmiths and pirated Nissan Consult software, why not target throwaway Nissan FWD cars with CVTs like the Rogue, Sentra and Altima? The G is one of the last great JDM RWD platforms. Sad to see it go out this way…

Obviously things like wheel locks (The Club, etc.) are physical. What exactly do you mean "electronic locks" in this context?

Thank you,

Rick

My clutch pedal position switch went bad on me some years ago. After that happened, I've often wondered if a hidden toggle on the that switch would suffice to interrupt the ignition from engaging the starter? Or for the MT crowd, the same on the brake pedal position switch. It would be a lot less intrusive than disconnecting the battery or pulling out fuses.

A hidden toggle on the clutch or brake pedal switches, the push button start switch, or the fuel pump are the easiest, least intrusive methods to disable the car. These mods can be done completely in the cabin and for less than $20.

Disabling the ignition or the starter gets a little more involved but still doable. Anything that causes a delay for potential thieves is better than nothing at all. If they want the car that bad they'll need a tow truck.

Like you said, the G/Z is RWD and has power so they can do skids/donuts.

See ILM-NC’s reply. I’m referring to tapping into electrical circuits in the car that, if interrupted, would prevent the car from starting (even if someone clones a key for the car). Colloquially a “killswitch”

Can be done several ways, but the goal is the same: when the car is parked, manually cut power to something that is required to start the car (there might be a better way to phrase this)

Right. A FWD Nissan econobox oversteering into a telephone poll while the CVT goes out for the second time in as many years wouldn't drive many likes.

It looks like it's getting bad... I see most of these videos coming out of Cali. Not sure how it is in my area. Regardless, I am looking to install several killswitches but don't want to make starting my car a hassle every time I want to dive it, so I'm toying around with the idea of using an Arduino board to read a USB security key. I have very little experience with these kinds of electronics but the idea seems like it'd be almost impenetrable. Unless a thief ripped apart the interior, found it, and knew what they were looking at, the only way to start the car would be with that unique security key. Not sure about the limitations of an Arduino system, or if it would even be suited for an automotive application like this. I wouldn't want a scenario like the program crashes, causing the fuel pump to shut off on the highway. Maybe someone with some experience can chime in.

Sounds like the good old 7AT "burnout mod" switch that interrupts the brake signal to the ECU will have a comeback.
If I find the thread, I will link it.

Back to the problem, although the G and Z are not as easy to steal as a Kia due to having to have more than a screwdriver, I anticipate that the Autel system and pirated Consult will gain a similar coast to coast interest especially in the larger cities.

The first video on the list above in the first post (I saw it earlier today on Reddit) looks absolutely like the Gs and Zs were specifically targeted, and a quick search for takeover or sideshow on IG and YouTube Shorts will show quite a few Gs and Zs being thrashed in takeovers. - along with a fair share of the usual victims: Camaros and Chargers / Challengers- I guess our cars are the new fodder for the takeover game.

Read a few articles, watched a few YouTube videos and ended up with the anti-theft device that Car and Driver picked in this article: https://www.caranddriver.com/car-acc...RoC_J8QAvD_BwE

Damn thing is not only handsome, but heavy and solid as it feels like i could take it into a war against dragons. Pretty easy to use as well.

Amazon has this model for a decent price if anyone else is interested in a little additional piece of mind. Note that the smallest version offered (also the least expensive) works fine in our cars.

Can't this just be cut?

It can, but it will take a lot longer than the "Gone in 60 Seconds" scenes.

Yep, comes down to the preparedness and willingness of the would-be thief. Having to cut the device (or steering wheel) weeds out some, but maybe not all. So several deterrents are a good idea.
