Akebono BBK Squealing when backing up (FIXED)

I have had a squealing / squeaking noise when backing up the G when cold or wet. While I don't mind it too much, it can be quite loud sometimes.

I am running Proto Spec Akebono's with Brembo NAO pads. I originally ran OEM Nissan Blank rotors and Akebono PRO Act pads. I had the same noise issue when backing up.

My Brembo pads: P56095N have an integrated shim like most aftermarket pads.

I am pretty sure the way to fix this is the OEM shim kit: D408M-JL00J. My Brembo pads come with integrated backing plates on them. The OEM kit appears to use an extra external shim that goes over the center shim. Is this shim supposed to be used with aftermarket pads?

I know there is already posts on this but not a lot of solutions on them. For reference my Q50 with the Akebono factory system does not make single sound when backing up cold or wet.

I would appreciate input on this, thanks!

For what it’s worth I used both OEM shims on my street and track pads with brake grease on the pads backing plate, between the two shims, and on the top shim. Never had any squealing that wasn’t attributed the track pad compound.

Difference was the pads I used didn’t have any integrated shims like your current Brembo pads do.

I’ve read those Brembo branded pads are pretty noises as well.

Thank you for sharing all the info.

It only makes the noise when backing up cold or wet. Other than that the pads are very quite.

Did you use the OEM pads? If not OEM what brand of pad did you use if you don't mind me asking. The OEM ones don't come with any shims. I think if I get the rear shim kit and use those over the Brembo pads with grease, I think that will fix the issue.

Not to send you down the wrong path, but have you considered the squeal might be coming from your parking brake?

That honestly just sounds like moisture build up. Trying the OEM shims is an easy step to rule out the shim possibility though.
While you have the pads out, file down the compound edges that make contact with the rotor just incase there some paint over spray from he backing plate.

I was running G-Loc pads, GS1's on the street and R12/R10's on track.

Thank you very much for the help and pad info.

The noise only comes from the rear, my guess still is because the rear pads are missing the external shim that is why they make noise when wet or cold. The rears use a two part shim, where most aftermarket pads are single shim integrated into the back of the pad.

I am going to order the shim kit and extra OEM grease packets from Amayama and when it comes in going to see if that resolves it.

That's a good option. I did not have the squeal with the floating calipers. It's only when I switch to the BBK. I had the parking brake looked at a few times and all was well with it. Thank you for the input.

Update to this, my suspicions where right. The rear external shims with grease fixed the issue! No more super loud squealing when backing up, no noise!

I used rear shim kit: D408M-JL00J and 1X grease packet: D400C-CD01B for both rear calipers. I only used the external C shaped shims on top of the Brembo backplate shims and did the not swap out the Brembo shims. The external C shaped shims clip right onto the rear pads. The OEM moly brake grease was used between all the shims.

The rear shim kits comes with the rubberized shims, brackets and external C shaped shims. I measured the rubber shim thickness and it is 0.62mm for reference. Maybe this can be sticky'd to help others with this really annoying issue.

Seems most aftermarket pad manufacturers don't know about the external shims or assume you will be using them.
