Issues with headlight bulbs

Could anyone here run me through the basics of changing out the bulbs in my g37 2009 sedan? I had a mechanic try and change them out yesterday... And outside of it being a pain to actually get the bulbs out, I was then told they didn't have the ones I need.

I have a high beam and a low beam out and I hear it's kinda complicated to find the right bulb. Where can I get the bulbs cheap, and do I need to consider anything else?

Thx for any and all help.

It used to be easy to change bulbs on cars... not anymore.

The G37 uses one bulb for high and low beam: D2S (Xenon)
Your problem might be the bulb, the high voltage ballast or something else.

I personally decided to replace HID low/high beam bulbs and ballasts with a relatively new product LED kit made by Lasfit https://www.lasfit.com/products/pro-...rward-lighting and is plug and play installation no cutting or splicing wires required. To install this kit you need to remove the front bumper and headlights assembly but is totally worth it. And what is really good about it is they provide 45 days return and 2 years replacement warranty and some reviewers are confirmed it worked.

I too have a passenger side headlight not working on my '08 G37. Its not the bulb. There is no power to the passenger side. I had to take it to a mechanic who has said that it could be a fuse or a $1342 power unit, both of which are located under the cowling where the wiper motors are located. labor will be 2.5 hrs and parts will be either the left light fuse or the $1342 power box.
Does anybody have any knowledge of this issue or does it seem unreasonable?

Brand new the IPDM (what you called "power box") will run between $825-1300 BRAND NEW from Infiniti (depending on vendor). Used they run ≈$100. This is just part cost. I am not sure the 2.5 hours labor is legit, but mechanics can charge what they want- it is their labor.

Do you know how to check fuses?

I would check fuse #57 and go from there.

I'm looking at an '09 Service Manual but your car is probaby the same... The "power box" your mechanic is talking about is the IPDM (Intelligent Power Distribution Module). That holds many fuses and relays and possibly (not sure) a bit of processing. Yes a complete replacement unit is expensive although I think he is quoting full list price and you could probably do better - if you had to. BUT, before you even think of throwing money at that you should be looking at the fuses in the IPDM. Specifically #54, 55, 56 & 57 which directly powering your headlights. There are also relays for the high- and low-beams but if one side is working correctly that means the relays are ok. Check those fuses - specifically 55 and 57 which power the RH lamp. Again, based on an '09 manual but yours should be similar.

Headlamp fuses

Re my G37 headlight that is not getting power. First, thank you for the two responses. The mechanic stated that to even check the relevant fuses, it would take 2.5 hrs to get at the ipdm where the left and right fuses are located. This just seems overly difficult. Are fuses 57 and others relevant to this issue easily checked?

While getting access to the IPDM is not the easiest, it is not 2.5 hours worth of labor either. You have to remove some clips from the passenger-side cowl and it lifts out. The module sits to the left of the battery (marked IPDM/er below:

From there you can check the fuses.

Thank you again. You are taking the mystery out of this and as you say, its very straight forward to get to the IPDM. My remaining question before I remove the battery to better access the IPDM is do I need to remove it and open it to access the relevant four fuses? Or are the fuses located in a different box/location?

Once you remove the battery, you will open the cover to the IPDM. From there you will locate the fuses that 13_SkylineSedan pointed out above and check them.

Again thanks. It took about 45 min. to find that the 15 amp fuse was bad. Put in a new one, right headlight worked for 1 min but started to blink then went out. Looks like I have a bigger issue than a fuse or perhaps the IPDM. But in any case, its probably time to take it to the dealer $$$.

If the headlight worked, even briefly, then the IPDM is good. That blinking is usually a sign the HID ballast/ ignitor is going bad. That flickering is likely pulling too much current which is what caused the fuse to blow.

Depending on your skills, I would get a used ballast/ ignitor assembly from eBay and swap that in. If you go new, stick with OEM or good quality units. I would avoid those on Amazon. This does require removing the headlamp assembly from the car... I would not take it to the dealer, or a mechanic, unless absolutely necessary.
