High-Flow Cats

I know there are threads discussing these, but I’ve read through most of them and can’t find a definitive answer for this question.

I live in the great old state of New York. And we’ve been blessed with the AMAZING California emissions standards. So that being said, I want high flow cats. My question is can I get them installed hassle free and live my life until I’m ready to get the car tuned? Or do I need to wait until it can be tuned. I’m not exactly stressed about anyone seeing the aftermarket cats or anything of that nature. I’m worried about a CEL. Have people had issues with this? Is there a specific brand I should look towards to avoid this? I’m new to the converter modifications side of things and any input would be greatly appreciated.

I have installed as have many others, the Fast Intentions Resonated Hi-Flow Cats with no CEL at all.

Mine are actually for sale (shameless plug) since I have switched my car, if you're interested:

Nothing shameless about it. I actually appreciate it. I’m not in the market too much for them quite yet though. I just ordered the invidia q300 cat-back. I’m thinking about doing the cats next spring. I just like to plan ahead. The FI ones are the ones I’ve heard the most CEL issues with. Of course I’ll never really know until I try, but I’m hoping enough people say they’ve had no issues to just persuade to me say F it lol.

I had that same setup as you. FI resonated HFC's, invidia q300. Had no problems at all and the sound was perfect.

You can enjoy your exhaust mods without a tune, and realize incremental gains. There's no urgency to get tuned.

Southern Tier, huh? Lemme guess... Corning? Ithica? Hello from the North Coast.

That runs contrary to over a decade of experiences here. FI products probably have the best reputation in that space on this forum.

People are saying... I've heard things...

Yea, FI makes a stellar product and have a great reputation. I remember reading a case where a member had leaks and believed it was because FI doesn't use the original mounting bracket but that was the first complaint I heard/read. If you're on the fence about the FI HFCs, you can look into Berks.

Jamestown actually, so more western than anything. Southern Tier just sounds better lol.

I definitely plan on getting it tuned. But I’d rather have everything that I want done to it before I do that. And the cats aren’t really that expensive in the long run, so I figured I’d get them out of the way quick. As far as FI goes, I trust their quality as a brand. I’ve seen a lot of their work. I just saw a few people on here showing how their converters were cracking and causing issues. The RHFC’s seem to be the go to, as I’m trying to avoid drone as much as possible while still getting whatever performance I can.

I looked into the Berks but I’ve seen multiple people say that the Berks with the invidia q300 catback was drone city. This is my second G37 and I know what this car can be like with drone, so I’m trying to avoid all of it that I can. I know with exhaust mods it’s gonna happen, but I’m trying to be conservative. So the FI RHFC’s are definitely what I want, I just don’t want the issues that I’ve read. Odds are I’ll get them anyways, but I figured I get some experienced opinions first.

FI cats and test pipes aren't designed to reuse the OEM bracket. That's something to consider, too.

Jamestown... never been. That's very SW. You could drive 8 hours up to Plattsburgh and never leave NY.

Had berk cats with the q300 as well. Can confirm that The Drone complaint is correct. Rasp at certain RPM's too. Sold them and got the resonated HFC's, had the exact sound I was looking for, no drone, no rasp and never had a CEL.

Do you by chance have a sound clip of it anywhere?

This did plenty. Sounds amazing. Like I said when it comes to sound, it’s all about minimizing the drone for me. These cars sound amazing. Hearing the exhaust is one thing, that head vibrating resonance is what I’m trying to avoid. A clip of you cruising down the high way would have sold me lol. I seriously appreciate though. This is probably the route I’ll take. Also random questions about the FI cats. Did you buy them new? And if so, how long did it take for them to come in? They say a 15-17 week lead time.

I agree with you 100%. Looks like we have similar interests regarding exhaust mods / sound. I took a trip to the Poconos with the berk cats and the q300, and the highway drone was maddening. I sold them shortly after. The FI RHFC's were exactly what I had hoped they would be.

I did order them new. If I remember correctly, the turnaround time was about 1 month (this was about 5 years ago). Was definitely worth the wait though.
