I learned on a brand new 1998 Honda Prelude. Took it home from the dealership that night terrified. But, made it.

Shoot, STown let me take his G around the block after we worked on his since I'd never driven a 6MT G. I'd like to take the opportunity to apologize again for that cringe experience.

I thought my Volvo was unforgiving but the G made me question whether or not I can actually drive a manual.

Oh come on... It's not that bad. You're just rusty.

98 mustang v6, underpowered and overly heavy clutch... then a Hyundai Elantra... WORST manual ever, car never jerked around when you staled so you couldn’t tell if you didn’t see the gauge drop!

Never stalled but the engagement had me all kinds of messed up. I'm sure if it was something I drove daily I'd figure it out; like I did with the Volvo but as a learning tool it wasn't the most forgiving.

The most "unforgiving" manual I've driven was my cousins 11 STI. Pedal engages really low and I'm so used to my Lancer. It engages way up high so that didn't help me out. He also had the car in sport mode so it was a little on the aggressive side.

I drove my 3000 for the first time in several years yesterday. Didn't stall once. LOL

It was like a mid 90's rolla. I don't know what it was, but that thing was the worst. Never drove a manual that touchy before.

I learned on an '85 F150 truck 4-speed with super low front and rear gears for beach and towing power. It was... challenging.

Next stick was an 87 MR-2 (used the corona/corolla transmission) - it was butter.

I'd say spend $500 on an old saturn or corolla and let him have at it. Cheaper than replacing your stage 2 setup when he burns the rivets off.

Buy him a car w/a stickshift.

Never going to learn until he actually owns a car with one.

Im Curious about this rjm clutch pedal. Ive had my car for around 8 months now. I bought it with a lightweight flywheel and stage 2 clutch already on it. The engagement point on mine was always much lower than a 370z.

At first i found the clutch stiffer and a bit odd in comparison to my last car (integra Also with a light weight flywheel and stage 2 clutch ) but now im used to it and i have no complaints driving it at all.

Im wondering if the rjm would be a waste for me at this point or if the money would feel well spent.
I have no issue shifting into gear or making my car smoothly take off without much thought. No jerking or hating my clutch. I did always like very grabby clutches. Stop and go traffic can be meh since its stiff but not to the point that i hate it.

If you had a chance to drive a G/Z with the RJM pedal, you'd have your answers. It's a great mod in every possible way... inexpensive, configurable, and a DIY project.

There are lots of threads on it. Here's mine from four years ago:

Rochester Thank you for the link that my forum noob a$$ didnt find on my own.

At first i was like why didnt he just link me that fantastic diagram he made (which is brilliant way to explain the difference btw) but tbh... This is fantastic reading material as i am enjoying my morning coffee and i am quite enjoying reading all of your back and forth comments between you all

What a great write up. Thank you so much! Odd thing is my engagement feels closer to the bottom picture of the diagram only very stiff. I guess ill have to look to see if i have this mod already when i bought the car and didnt know lol. She was stock other than a lightweight flywheel and a stage 2 clutch.

My buddies 370z seems to be more like the pic in the top of the diagram ( and boy do i hate his clutch engagement with a passion, i often tease him asking if he hits his chin with his knee when he shifts

Anyhow to wrap up this reply. Thank you 🍺

your son will never learn unless he gets his own car with a stick shift.

Get a cheap 2000+ Ford Focus w/a stick shift.

Lol the other day my buddy picked up a ‘11 civic SI, he had been driving a mustang. (Had a few around my friend group) he said the clutch was LIGHTYEARS better for him as it’s light, not a long travel, and it’s fun!

Still rocking the 7AT, wanna try a 6MT soon...
