New Member saying hi and some Questions

Hi everyone,

So recently my 3.5s Altima was written off in an accident . I am with a rental car atm, and seriously looking to buy a G37(XS) sedan.

I was told to avoid the G37 since it has Differential issues (aggressive driving can blow out the rear diff); mainly this vehicle isn't equipped well enough for its motor.
So im looking to see feedback from you guys if this is a real thing?

Also, what years are best to avoid for common problems. Thanks a whole lot and appreciate everyone's replies.

lol, this is not a real thing...the only thing close might be that the rear differential BUSHING which is full of liquid may blow out and leak which is a pain to replace but very doable ...a few hours of shop time (if you dont wantot change it yourself) and about $100.00 for an upgraded bushing...most people probably would't even bother changing it and don't even notice its leaked...the diff itself is the R200 used on a variety of Nissan vehicles...lost of people add FI to this motor and push way more power than stock with the stock drivetrain

the only really "big" issue is with pre-2011 motors used a crappy interal oil galley gasket that may leak and is an expensive fix due to the labour involved with getting to it....this was resolved by nissan switching to a metal gasket after that....

Pre-2012. I track my car, at 52k miles the diff bushing was fine and differential hasn't exploded. I replaced the bushing just because and added a finned diff cover just because.

You source of information is not reliable.

I suspect spending some time on the 370Z forums will "net" you some blown diff stories.

My suspicion seems incorrect.

Thanks for the replies.

I didn't visit any 370Z forums. I heard that info from a few people who had dealings with the car, and a tow truck driver whose friend blew out his diff from racing it. Minor mods. Tune, intake, exhaust.

So from what I'm gathering, pre 2011 have a bad gasket. So 2011 and up are a safer bet?

I mean this cars gotta have it's quarks. The Lincoln LS for example would burn through ignition coils. Coils gave false scanner readouts too, making people think its throttle body etc.. Altima 2008 3.5 had bad AC pulleys that whine like a mosquito. Anything similar on G37? Bad solenoid transmission switches? Thanks again.

The most common points of failure unique to this car are the clutch slave cylinder, the main diff bushing, and the pre-2012 rear timing cover gasket. That's pretty much it.

I thought much the same and for the most part (as far as reliability) Infiniti did a really good job addressing the potential issues the car had or could have as years progressed. Most with a 2012 or 13 have the best version of the car overall as the pre 2011 issues are non-existent. Have there been a few bad apples? I'm sure, but as a whole a good car and you get a lot for the money.

Quirks?
  • 7AT is indecisive. Reliable, but indecisive
  • Trunk button wants you to stand in a specific spot before it responds to the key fob
  • At least in my case - you'll have to reapply the Auto up on power windows
These are quirks, but none that have caused any part failure or unreliability.

i did some reading on the concentric slaves and it seems other manufacturers use it too ie the mustang and they all have the same weakness. i used to think it was an infiniti thing but its not. idk how many other cars have it out there but they all suck

I’ve never heard of anything serious happening to a G37. I think I’m one of the very few who had an issue and that was my throttle bodies somehow died lol. I just replaced both and I was back on the road. I am dealing with a minor coolant leak right now, but it only leaks when I drive really aggressively (that’s why my wife is driving the G) lol. Good luck on your search!

rear differential bushing is no reason to avoid this car, its not an expensive item to replace. i just replaced mine with whiteline and it feels much better anyway.

as far as 7AT being indecisive or weird at times i would agree, but i just recently did a tune with EcuTEk and it took care of that issue, the throttle response is much snappier and car doesnt lag anymore, mind you the car has 100K miles on it but feels better than when i bought it with 60K. so there are things you can do if you are willing

i don't think you have much to worry about OP. there are a bunch of high mileage G's out there. that's gotta mean something.

if anything parts will be affordable.
