For the record... that was awesome!

Just bought an 09 G37x last week in 7AT and love it. Been reading up quite a bit here (great site and members!) and excited. Anyways, I just pulled the AWD fuse out from the engine bay and oh man, this car is like the gift that keeps on giving, I've been so happy with how many dynamic check boxes this car fulfills but to be able to switch to RWD and blow donuts in the parking lot before work is a gift I did not expect to receive!! (for the record)

Glad you're enjoying it!
Thought this would be a good place to ask, I've heard deactivating the AWD relay can cause damage to the transfer case. Is this true?

Don't know anything about the transfer cases (transmissions) on these cars but I'd look into schematics, see what actually deactivates causing one axle to become "dead"

Normally the car is 100% rwd biased. Putting a switch, or pulling the fuse keeps it that way. The signal that would tell the front to engage never reaches its destination, so the front is never engaged. Its still an open diff, but it does become RWD. If you want to do donuts or skids, consider that your steering angle is really bad because of the front drive axels. Be prepared to compensate for that or kiss the curb .

You CAN damage the transfer case doing this though. If you are in rwd mode, and you engage awd by accident while the car is on, you may need a new transfer case. Personally have seen this happen to two people already.

Whoa... you can damage the transfer case (differential?) by going from RWD to AWD just when the car is “ON” or do you mean “driving/diff engaged”? I have always changed positions (pulled the fuse) while car is off but just so I didn’t arc and blow a fuse...

You will definitely blow the fuse, but it can go worse. Depending on what the car is doing as you switch. Conditions have to be right for **** to hit the fan, but it does happen.
