Passenger air bag light keeps turning on. Is there a recall?
Hey guys. I have a 2013 G37 Sedan Journey. Bought the car pre-owned about 2 years ago and lately just noticed that the passenger air bag light will turn on even with an adult passenger. Most of my passengers weight under 140 pounds, but I am pretty sure that is considered adult weight. I did some research, and found out a lot of G owners have this issue. I just cannot find a solution or if there was a recall that I missed. My car's warranty already expired and I am wondering if any of you guys resolved this issue. Thanks for your time.

I've seen other posts where people have the same issue and it's usually the result of a faulty passenger occupant sensor. From what I've seen that cannot be purchased separately from a seat and is not covered under any warranty or recall. The seat is stupid expensive too.

Wow. $8,000 out of our own pockets? Shouldn't this be a recall though for safety? I really hope this won't happen, but I can imagine a big law suit for Infiniti if an accident will happen and the air bag will not deploy. Are you guys experiencing this problem? Last night it would go on and eventually go off. This keeps happening and it is getting irritating.
You can bypass the sensor

Just note, with this installed, the passenger airbag will deploy in an accident regardless of the seat being occupied. You should take precautions such as not allowing small children to ride in the front seat. Also, you will want to uninstall this and claim ignorance if you are in an accident an the passenger airbag deploys without an occupant in the front seat.

I had the same problem, 2011 G37 Sedan. Dealer replaced the entire front passenger seat, because the car was still on full warranty - yes, it was covered under warranty, and it would have been hella expensive out of pocket. It has since happened again a few times, but not regularly enough for me to bother with it.

I have had issues with my front passenger seat too. When my sister sits in the seat, the airbag light off illuminates which makes sense, she is below the weight limit. However, at times, adults have sat down and the light will illuminate (random occurrences). Not sure if it has to do with how someone sits in the seat. I took it to the dealer and was told they replaced the sensor.
I did a search prior to this post and found that the light will not illuminate at all when someone is NOT sitting in the seat, it is basically deactivated. Once someone sits in the seat, the sensor then determines if it needs to force the airbag off due to low weight (the light should illuminate) and if someone sits down who is above the weight limit, the light should remain off (airbag will deploy/active).

Passenger seat occupied by a small adult, child or child restraint as out-lined in this section: The <light icon> illuminates to indicate that the front passenger air bag is OFF and will not inflate in a crash.

page 72 of 490 is where the passenger airbag description begins.
Nowhere in the 1+ page of disclaimers does it actually mention a weight, although it gives a laundry list of reasons for the sensor to malfunction, such as not sitting up straight and leaning to the side.
It's almost like the whole section was written as a CYA
Well, that's great...
I'll have to keep an eye on it next time someone rides with me and see if it does it again. Not going to buy an $8k seat in my car which is only worth like $4k now lol, maybe I'll have to do that always on bypass.
One thing I've always been confused about is that the G is the only car with this passenger airbag light that I've seen. Do others cars just blow the airbag regardless? Or do they do the same thing just without the light telling you it's off?

I have seen other cars with a similar light. However, in my last car (E46) it would blow the airbags regardless (no light).
When my now-ex gf would sit in my G, the light would always come on. She was very short, about 110lbs, but the airbag sensor would not detect her(well, it did detect her, just thought she did not weigh enough for airbags). She could sometimes make it work if she moved the back of the seat (uncomfortably) straight up and sat with her butt all the way back.

Actually I realized I'm just dumb. Beacuse I went and looked at my other cars and they all have it (aside from my s2k). On the other cars it's just not a big giant light, it was way more hidden.
Anyways, now I'm thinking my sensor is actually fine. I gave my friend a ride and the light didn't come on, but then I had my sister in the car after that and the light came on again. She says she only weighs like 90lb. So must be below the cutoff.
