Mobil 1 Annual Protection

I commute 120 miles a day (all highway and spirited), so I end up doing a lot of oil changes. I was using Mobil 1 Extended Performance, which is guaranteed for 15,000 miles, and doing oil changes at 7,500 miles.

This weekend I saw Mobil 1 Annual Protection at Pep Boys. It's guaranteed for 20,000 miles. I got it, and the "extended performance" filter. Would you trust its claims? I'm planning to change at 15,000. Do you think that's safe? I'm hoping I can save time and money going this route, but I don't want to sacrifice my engine. Thanks in advance!

Those estimates are for ideal conditions, and the inside of a VQ is hardly ideal. The complicated valvetrain generates a lot of heat and oil tends to shear fairly rapidly. I'd recommend having your used oil tested before attempting extended drain intervals. You can find Wix oil analysis kits relatively cheap. Test your 7500mi oil to make sure that the viscosity is still in spec and that you have a TBN >1. If you're in the clear, push 10k next time and try again.

I do around the same, and every 4k-5k miles I just go to Wal-Mart, spend $30- on mobil 1 high mileage, and mobil 1 oil filter. Use up 20 minutes of my time in the driveway, and do it myself. I fill up 5g HD buckets with the old oil, and once filled throw it on CL for free. Someone usually always grabs it for whatever reasons. Done

If there's one of those things not to be cheap on is oil changes, especially us highway commuters.

That's a unique disposal method, for sure! Thanks for sharing. I put my used oil in the containers of the new oil and take them to pep boys. They'll take 10qts at a time.

lol at the CL disposal method
I take up to 20 qts (like wolff, use the old 5 qt jugs) to autozone or O'reillys, also ATF as well.

Don't think I'd feel good about going over 10k regardless of what the oil company claims, these engines run pretty hot and it's so cheap to do changes every 7k miles (especially w/ the awesome Pennzoil rebates almost always going) that I just take the 20 minutes, give or take, and the $20 (including filter) for full synth changes.

I would rather go with Castrol, Pennzoil, or Amsoil. 10k Max. Use a quality filter, I have Purolator One made for the M56.
