quick question - transfer case refill
Hi all,
I have 45k miles on my G37x and decided to change the fluids in the diffs (75w90) and transfer case (Matic S) while I was at it. Bought the car with 21k miles and doubt they were done before.
I'm debating replacing the transmission fluid sometime down the road and started researching the process and stumbled across this Service Bulletin which talks about having the fluid at a certain temp and engine running to get the fluid level right.

So my question is... does the same or similar procedure apply (certain temp and engine running) when refilling the transfer case? When I refilled mine I refilled it like I did the diffs - engine was cool and wasn't running and I filled until the fluid started running out of the fill hole.

1. Remove filler plug (1) and gasket. Then check that fluid is filled
up from mounting hole for the filler plug.
CAUTION:
Never start engine while checking fluid level.
2. Set a new gasket onto filler plug, and install it on transfer and

I don't think it would matter too much, but are you sure matic S is what goes into your transfer case? Double check your paper work. If I remember correctly mine says, matic S into transmission and matic J into transfer case.
Technically matic S is the replacement for matic J, but I now see that Nissan has reintroduced matic J again and my manual was specific that matic J should go into the transfer case.

Yes, my 2012 manuals says S in the trans and J in the transfer case.
In a lot of what I read, it seemed like J was superseded by S and guys were using it.
So that's what I did, and hopefully its not a problem. Otherwise I will switch back if its available again and necessary to do.

I've been second guessing the Matic S.
Seeing as my car is a 2012, with the manual likely printed in 2011, I decided to check a manual from something like a 2016, and it still says Matic J. So maybe I should have put the J, and maybe the J isn't discontinued or replaced by S??
So I decided to go to the dealership and ask the guy at the parts counter. Hilarious, "oh, it probably doesn't matter", calls tech over, "oh, either is fine, the manual says you can use either!, would you like me to print the sheet?", so I said sure. He comes back and says, "Oh, it says Matic J, so thats what we use".
So I grab two bottles of J. I ask for two new washers and the guys say to just reuse my old ones. Seeing as I already reused them the first time, I thought cheap insurance. They didn't have any and couldn't find any at other dealerships within 60miles. What a joke! Took my existing ones to a local parts store and got what I needed.
